Spent 4 days prior to going on a cruise with Royal Caribbean. We toured around the area extensively, found the weather great, lots of interesting things to do and places to go during our stay.

The Las Olas area was very interesting. We took a river cruise (see separate journal) toured a fairly large complex which included several restaurants, bars, theatres, also, walked through a large park area along the river. Spent a day at Billie's Everglade Park, which was a lot of fun. (See separate journal) Also spent a few hours at Butterfly world (separate journal), which was more interesting than I was expecting.

Quick Tips:

We were there Dec. 6 to 10th and were amazed at how empty everything was. We were told it was off season, but I am not sure why. Our hotel was cheap and very nice, the weather was high seventies and there were no crowds anywhere. The tip is go then rather than whenever the "high season" is.

Best Way To Get Around:

It would be very difficult to find a location where you don't need a vehicle unless you just want to lay around on the beach. We rented a car and had little or no trouble finding our way around. Our cab from the airport was very expensive (no he didn't go around in circles) and feel it is probably cheaper to rent a car if you plan to move around.

Ramada Plaza Beach Resort

The hotel is an older building, which has been recently renovated. It is located on the beach in an area, which appears to have more condos than hotels. We thought our room was excellent for the price and typical of a Ramada class hotel. The hotel had a large restaurant, a lounge (The Polo Lounge), which has live entertainment nightly, a swimming pool and a small exercise room. Of course it also had the standard cubicle where you can arrange for various tours, cruises, car rentals etc.

Ramada Plaza Beach Resort Restaurant

We had two dinners in this restaurant in the four days we stayed at the hotel. The second because the first had been excellent in quality and low in price. The restaurant had a sort of happy hour for meals where there were four course meals available from 5 to 7 PM at very reasonable prices. There was a selection of about 8 entrees priced between $9.95 and $15. This included soup, salad and dessert. (no the desserts were not jello, they were excellent as well. The entree's we selected were chicken marsala, a chicken stir fry, filet mignon and shrimp dish. All were a good standard of food. Excellent for the price.

Billie's Everglade Park Swamp Safari

You can get specific directions by picking up a brochure at any hotel or tourist info centre. This is a fairly large centre in the everglades that would appear to be able to handle about 1000 tourists a day. It was not very busy when we were there which was great for us. We took a ride in a large swamp buggy, which traveled on roads, through water and stopped to view lots of animals, both local and imported. Sort of a safari tour. Viewed several alligators, crocodiles as well as many African animals. We stopped at a hut where about 3 times a day a guide gave talks and demonstrations about poisonous snakes. Pretty good and lots of snakes etc. to look at while you are there. The highlight for us was a ride on a airboat through the everglades. The ride stopped to feed alligators, turtles etc. and got up pretty good speed a few times to give us some thrills. Incredibly smooth ride. Wish I could have taken one out by myself. There is a restaurant available for snacks, which was certainly nothing special. Cost was about $30 each. Worth doing especially if you have never seen the everglades or ridden in an airboat.

Butterfly World

Activity

Butterfly World

Cost was $13.50 each plus $1 to get into the park. In one area you see butterflies at various stages of development and if you stay a few minutes will see several actually emerge from their cocoons. There is a large covered area where there are large plants and vines that the mature butterflies fly around and land on the leaves etc. Many varieties, colours etc. There is a separate area where various types of birds roam as well such as hummingbirds and various other small colorful birds. They are very tame; you can get within inches of some of them. Other display areas house larger birds such as Lorikeets from Australia. There is an insectarium, a collection of bugs, spiders, moths etc.

I found it interesting and I am not really interested in birds and butterflies. I imagine it would be fascinating for people who are interested or studying these types of species.

Las Olas Riverfront Marketplace

This is a very nice area developed primarily for the tourist trade. There is a very pretty waterfront park with wide walking paths that wind along the riverfront. There are trees, plants, flowers etc. as well. There is also a large complex of buildings, which house some shops as well as from 8 to 12 restaurants which generally would not be considered fine dining. There was a Hooters (the only brand name place) We had lunch at a place called the Ugly Tuna Saloona and it was fine, burgers etc. The complex also housed a large theatre complex of about 12 theatres.

One of the highlights was a river cruise ($14 per person), which winds through Fort Lauderdale. There is a guide who tells you whose mansions, yachts etc. you are passing. The name Wayne Huizenga comes up often. He lives here, his brother here, his daughter here. All places were $3,000,000 plus. Also various celebrities live or have rented there while shooting movies (Lee Majors, Sonny and Cher, Barbara Mandrell, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis). Saw huge yacht owned by the owner of the Gap, Victoria's Secret and related businesses. (not Wayne Huizenga) I thought it was a little pricey, but worth doing while you are there. Gives you some idea how the elite live. As it was December, there were X-mas lights up and on in the evenings in the Las Olas complex that were very nice. There was some live music in the evenings and an outdoor bar that was doing a booming business.
