Nantucket is Nectar to City Living

A December 2005 trip to Nantucket by ColinD

The location was right in town, the price was keen (for Nantucket), and the rooms were.... quirky and clean. Don't expect much, but then again, don't go to Nantucket to spend time in your room.

Black Eyed Susan's

Restaurant

Quote:
This is a great place, my favourite eatery on the island, though there is no dial-in reservation system. Susan takes reservations on the porch of the restaurant at 6pm sharp for that evening's sittings, so get there at 5:45 and wait with the queue to get your seats. They serve really good fresh food, and the place has a great atmosphere!! BYO beer or wine makes it an even more affordable option on this island, where expense is rarely a consideration for most. If you're on a budget in Nantucket, this is the place to go, and if you're not on a budget in Nantucket, this is also the place to go.

I'd heard bad things about this place. It used to be an institution on the island but had burnt down and was replaced by a far more soulless recreation apparently. So yes, it has lost some of its quirky character and yes, there is a lot more pretension about it and no live bands anymore, but it is still a reasonably nice place with good bar/bistro food, a range of beers, good inexpensive wine, and an atmosphere that has not been totally ruined. It's not the same old Brotherhood, but it's good all the same.

Provisions

Restaurant

Quote:
A sandwich bar that makes, WITHOUT ANY DOUBT OR CONSIDERATIONS, the best sandwich in the world. The Turkey Terrific is a mountain of a sandwich: Portuguese bread, mayo, warm roasted turkey slices, tomato, stuffing, and cranberry sauce (cheese is optional). Go for the full sandwich and you'll not eat again that day, or share one with your loved one. She'll be thanking you for a long time!! (I hadn't been to the island for 8 years, and it was my first stop off the ferry - just THAT good.)

Jetties Beach

Attraction

Quote:
This is the closest beach to the main town of note (children's beach is closer but not big enough really to merit discussion). There are good facilities here at jetties and a nice calm ocean, but the sand is a little coarse in places. If you want peace and quiet, wander left up the beach to get past the dunes and sit under the bluffs and big houses.

Surfside Beach

Attraction

Quote:
I love this beach! First it is a nice distance away from town and makes a really good bike journey. Wander down some of the side streets on the way out to the beach and stop off at something natural on the way back for food and drinks. Surfside is a long and sandy beach with good waves and a little (sometimes strong) undercurrent. It also tends to attract a really *nice* set of people. Enjoy!

Actors Theatre of Nantucket

Attraction | "Candlelight Theatre"

Quote:
This is a small cinema house, bar, and restaurant-cafe rolled into one that serves some good beers and also the best gin and tonics we had all holiday. They offer sizable free pours, and there is always a good atmosphere in there.

Cisco Brewers

Attraction

Quote:
This is a new brewery. I may have gotten the name wrong, but I certainly know that one of the beers is called Cisco. It is on the Cisco Road a nice bike ride out of town. Go to Cisco Beach for the day and stop by the brewery on the way home for a tour and tasting session--excellent!!

It's also a bar. Sit at the counter and get your beers and cocktails from "Coach," barman and raconteur. Listen to the locals chatting with this guy about the fishing. I wouldn't necessarily eat here, but the beers are good and the atmosphere comfortable.

Rent your bike here or at the other bike shops nearby, and take a helmet! There are way too many large SUV's for this small island, but there are good cycle trails. It is only a small island, and the beaches and nature trails inland are always worth a visit. Get away from it all by going on some of the smaller routes that aren't advertised. On the popular round-trip to Sconset via Polpis, take the roads to either Tom Nevers or up to the highest point on the island (dirt track). Then you'll find true peace and quiet.
