Relaxing in the Dominican Republic

A July 2005 trip to Juan Dolio by korngirl4573

I was looking for a quick and inexpensive getaway. Flights to Dominican Republic are just that, and resorts seem to be as well. This is not a highly visited area by Americans, which was a nice change.

We went to a casino which was at another hotel right down the road. Our hotel offered a free shuttle. While we were there, we gambled a little and got free drinks and cigarettes.

Quick Tips:

The hotel concierge, Dominic, was great. He got us a great deal for a day trip into Santo Domingo.

Best Way To Get Around:

It's kind of in a remote area. We walked around during the day, towards some of the other hotels, with basically a lot of locals trying to shine your shoes and sell you stuff.
Best Things Nearby:
Casino and capital of Santo Domingo

Best Things About the Resort:
Pool area and entertainment

Resort Experience:

The two-bedroom suite that was booked for us was not in great shape. It was very old, not kept well, dirty, and on the first floor. I was a little worried about the resident lizards making their way into the room through the cracks. I asked to be transferred into another room and the hotel was accommodating. There were only two of us, so we didn't need the two bedrooms, so we opted to stay in a single room on the second floor, with a balcony overlooking the ocean in the newer area of the resort. This definitely helped. The food was mediocre but drinks were great! They only serve Dominican beer, Presidente, which I acquired a taste for, which is odd, because I don't drink beer at all. We did have a little trouble getting the room cleaned on a daily basis. I had to call numerous times. Once they didn't come until 10pm.

There seemed to be a lot of locals coming for the long weekend, Thursday, and Sunday, and they like to party, especially the teenagers. We met some fun people from England. Other than that, we pretty much kept to ourselves. I wouldn't go back to this particular resort or this area of the Dominican Republic. I was in a specific situation where I needed to be as close as possible to Santo Domingo, so it worked for me.
