A travel journal to Leesburg by HorseRacing101

Go to downtown Leesburg for a wonderful shopping experience. Stop in many of the cafes for a quick bite. The King Arms Tavern has a wonderful Southern favorite--peanut soup--as well as other good dishes. The Loudoun Museum has various programs and walking guides for a small donation.

King Arms TavernBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

The King Arms Tavern offers a variety of local cuisine and colonial favorites. The cosy setting and friendly staff only add to the ambience of this restaurant. They offer a wonderful old Virginia fave, peanut soup, which is a must have. The dishes are served in a timely manor, and the portion sizes are huge.

If you drive about 10 miles west on route 7, past the Round Hill exit, you will see a huge barn with a covered wagon on front on your right. This is Hill High Country Store, known for it's fresh baked pies. If you've ever dreamed of a type of pie, they have it. From Apple to Cherry to Blueberry Cream cheese, the selection is top notch. The coffee is fresh brewed with about six different choices. They also offer a large variety of freshly made deli sandwiches.

There is outdoor seating at the pond on picnic tables (fisherman welcome/bait store). There are also geese and ducks year-round for the kids to feed (duck feed inside).
The seating indoors is a quaint country setting (complete with red checker curtains). Seating is limited however, so try to either arrive before 11am or after 12:30pm unless you do not mind eating outside by the pond.

Long time owners, Ron and Kathy, are more than willing to tell you about the business and local activities. The staff is always up on the best-hidden places (ask about Bear’s Den). The best advice is avoid going between 11am and 12:30pm for lunch hour rush.

They do have an ordering service if you want to order pies or sandwiches ahead.

**UPDATE**
After years of business, Hill High is due to close at the beginning of April06.

Attraction

This wonderful museum offers a look into the local history of Loudoun County, from the Revolution to the Civil War. Many of the items found here were donated by local residents. There was a very enjoyable video on local Civil War history.

The local sport of choice is fox hunting. Many farms offer trail riding, giving you the chance to see some of the most beautiful mountains, the Blue Ridge, by horseback (good for family and fun in groups). Private rides can be arranged for a more personal experience. During the main hunting season, October to December, some stables even offer a chance to ride with the local hunts (for experienced riders ONLY).
