Paris

A March 2005 trip to Paris by ingrid_k

I went to Paris alone! I don't speak French, but managed to get along just fine. I found the street vendors that sell crepes and panini sandwiches were wonderful! Much cheaper than eating in some of the restaurants.

Overview

eiffel tower
I loved the small artist stands that sell oil paintings along the river, I loved drinking wine outside sitting near the river in the latin quarter and watching the nightlife scene unfold on the street in front of cafes. I also enjoyed walking the narrow streets of Montmartre and getting lost, walking up and down the steps to Sacre Coeur, where you can see that Paris really does go on forever...

Quick Tips:

Eat from the street vendors that sell crepes and paninis; they ROCK! Eat as much Nutella as possible.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walk; it is especially nice to walk along the river. If you are going to sightsee, take a guided tour to save time, or taxis are fine, though don't bother at rush hour, as they are difficult to hail.

St. JacquesBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Hotel St. Jacques"

The hotel was undergoing renovation at the time, but the lobby was really cute and clean, even with the painting that was happening. The room was small, typical for Paris and clean. I had a cute bathroom inside my room and the bed was comfortable. The staff at the front desk were incredibly helpful and friendly, as I do not speak French. I would definitely stay in this hotel again, and I love the area!!!

March is still a bit chilly in Paris, but nothing was as beautiful as all the lights reflecting on the river. I loved going by the Eiffel Tower, especially as it was spectacular. I also enjoyed being outside on the boat, even though it was cold. It was nice to get a quick tour, and also, it felt as if this would be a romantic place to go if you were with a significant other, especially at night!

L'Open TourBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

This tour was cool, especially if you don't have a lot of time and want to see the big sights. I am NOT normally a tour bus kind of girl, but I liked this option because there are four different routes that all connect, and you can hop on or off any of the buses on any of the routes. I was able to see many big sights in a short amount of time and take some great photos by sitting up top in the open-air portion of the buses.

The downside - the automatic audio guided tour kept cutting out (on every bus I got on), so you couldn't always hear the commentary, which was annoying. The upside, no confusing subway. If I was going to be in Paris for longer than a few days, I would definitely take the subway.

This a good option to maximize your time and sightseeing.

Cathédrale Notre-DameBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Notre Dame Cathedral"

Notre Dame
This is a spectacular place. I was enthralled by the service that was occuring when I entered the church and that it was in Latin. I am not Catholic, but there is something so sacred and beautiful just being inside this place. I was blessed to be inside the church just as the sun was setting and the light inside the stained-glass windows was stunning. I was so awestruck by this experience that I returned in the daylight hours and found it equally as beautiful.
