Best Second-Hand Clothes Shopping in Cambridge

A September 2005 trip to Cambridge by Kate Chopin

$1 per pound for great second-hand clothing--no more needs to be said. This store is for the scroungers, the searchers, and the bargain hunters among us. Those who prefer clothing with that store-bought, new crispness need not continue reading.

The Garment District offers a wide array of funky pants, shirts, sweaters, bags, and hats in a myriad of colors and sizes. If you need a costume or an outfit to paint in, it's your go-to place. More importantly, though, on the times listed above the Garment District opens up a vast floor space that is covered in clothing. All of the clothing is $1 per pound, and there's some great stuff in there. On my last trip,I got a J-Crew sweater, an H&M cardigan, and a funky hand-sewn vintagey sweater for under $3. The key is to go with an adventurous attitute and a clean pair of sneakers (you will need to walk over the clothing multiple times to find the good stuff).

In addition to the great $1 a pound clothes, there are also more conventional clothing racks througout the three-story floor for those in search of a particular set of jeans or the perfect color T-shirt. The store, in fact, kind of reminds me of a rainbow of clothing. Even if you don't find anything - which I highly doubt - it's an enjoyable cultural exercise to watch everyone crawling and climbing over the clothes, picking up, trying on, and discarding back to the floor. Then you can watch as people go to the big scale to have the garbage bags filled with clothes weighed.
