Overview

Quote:
Chur (pronounced /koor/) is the capital of the Graubünden canton, and is also the oldest continuously settled city in Switzerland. Originally it was believed that the history of the city went back approximately 5,000 years – ‘Chur’ comes from the Celtic word kora or koria (clan, tribe). However, recently a landlord who was building an underground garage in the neighborhood below the cathedral got the surprise of his life when they discovered archeological remains that dated back approximately 13,000 years. The finds from this dig are currently on display in Zürich, but will be housed in Chur when the Cathedral’s restorations are completed in 2007. In Roman times,...Read More

The Comfort Hotel Post Chur (http://www.comforthotelpost.ch/) is located in the heart of old-town Chur, on the pedestrian-only Postrasse 11. It is within easy walking distance of the train station/PostBus, just 10 to 15 minutes via the Bahnhoffstrasse, as well as a variety of restaurants, shopping, bars, local attractions, and the city bus lines. While the hotel has been around for a number of years, it has recently undergone extensive renovations. The rooms are simply but neatly furnished in Scandinavian-style furnishings. My room included two double beds pushed together to form a queen-size bed, a desk, TV, small table, bedside table, and a couple chairs. The bed linens were nice...Read More

For 60 years, the family-run Café Merz at Bahnhofstrasse 22 has been an important part of the culinary scene in Chur. Not only do they turn out the finest chocolates in the Graubünden canton, but their bakery and restaurant products are so popular that 10% of Chur's population enjoys Merz products on a daily basis. Ideally situated across the street from the Kunsthaus, and a few minutes’ walk from the train station, Merz is easy to find. They have a chocolate shop, bakery, and two restaurants: one at ground level and one upstairs. The upstairs restaurant is so busy that reservations at lunchtime are a must. As you enter their store, you will be greeted with their delicious...Read More

The Romantik Hotel Stern (Reichsgasse 25, Chur) has been providing hospitality to Chur visitors for over 300 years. While I did not stay at the hotel, I did enjoy a lovely dinner in their namesake restaurant, which bustles with locals and tourists alike. The restaurant is paneled in carved stone pine with matching furniture, with some paintings by Alois Carigiet, a noted Swiss artist. There are two parts to the restaurant, the outer room, good for larger groups, is more brightly lit; while the back room is cozier, perfect for a relaxing, romantic dinner. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, but they do not all speak Engli...Read More

The Schlosshotel Adler, located in the picturesque town of Tamins, just a few minutes southwest of Chur, is more than just a inn, although they do have attractive rooms for CHF95-115 ($73-89) year-round. The Hotel Adler is also home to a conference center, and an outstanding restaurant, very worth the short drive or train journey from Chur. (take the local trains to the “Reichenau-Tamins” station, and walk approximately 200m to the Adler) Should you not speak German, there is an English version of the menu available, and the host, Andreas Stump, also speaks excellent English. The menu reflects a comb...Read More

The charming village of Parpan is located about 20 minutes from Chur by car or PostBus. Should you be in the area, you may want to stop in at the Brügger-Parpan (http://www.bruegger-parpan.ch/) shop, which specializes in making a local delicacy called Bündnerfleisch (dried meat). The making of Bündnerfleisch is an interesting rocess. First, the right cows (or pigs) must be selected - older animals are better, as they have more natural flavor. Although the Brüggers - who are in their 4th generation of production - do not raise their own cows, they do work closely with local farmers to choose the best quality beef. Once the beef has been selected, it will take between...Read More

While many people may not be familiar with Chur, they are doubtless familiar with one of Chur's most famous sons: biomechanical fantasy artist H.R. Giger (www.hrgiger.com), who designed and created the fantastic futuristic sets for Alien. Fans of the artist or for those who are perhaps looking for something a little different may be interested to discover that Giger not only has a museum in Gruyères, but that he has opened "Giger Bars" in both Gruyères and in Chur, where you can enjoy drinks and company among the futuristic artwork of Giger. And when I say, "among the artwork," I don't just mean art on the wall - the Giger bars are designed to integrate his biomecha...Read More

Southwest of Chur, on the banks of the Rhine River, there is a charming village by the name of Tamins, home to the Schlosshotel Adler Hotel and Restaurant (+41 (0)81 641 10 44), hosted by Andreas and Monika Stump; and the Schloss Reichenau winery (+ 41 (81) 641-11-95). A Brief Bit of Info About Swiss Wines Every wine affiando dreams of the opportunity to sit down with a fine winemaker in their private cellar, enjoying a private degustation. It has certainly long been a daydream of mine – and I was about to have it fulfilled. When asked to identify major wine regions around the worl...Read More
