Sicily Tour

An October 2005 trip to Palermo by jadednomad

For starting out in Sicily, Palermo is a good launching pad.

It had very clean, modern lines and modern decor. It was well lit. It was in a good neighborhood easily accessible to the main thoroughfares. Beware the corner it sits on: people whip around it without looking at all hours of the day. Otherwise, it seems very safe. Each room I've seen has a spacious balcony. Despite daytime traffic, there is little audible inside the rooms. But because of this modernism, keep your key in the wall slot in order to turn on the lights! Elevators work smoothly. There is a diverse groups of guests.

The daytime front-desk staff is a bit snooty and not very helpful with English, despite intense efforts in broken Italian, but the waiters/bartenders/night staff is excellent. Vincenzo is the night guy, and he speaks excellent English and is great at helping out the less-fluent with Italian, directions, etc. Daniele is the bartender and, while a bit shy, also very helpful for that glass of Coke or even hot chocolate, in addition to the regular spirits.
