The setting for this Gold Crown Resort in the Berkshires is beautiful. There is even better scenery in the summer with the green mountains, meadows, and beautiful flowers planted everywhere. The resort is large and still growing: presently there are 14 two- and three-story buildings with about 225 units, and they are adding another 180 units. All units are air-conditioned and have fireplaces and balconies. There are two types of one-bedroom units: "A" is more spacious and has a full kitchen with a dishwasher, Jacuzzi, and larger balcony outfitted, with a dining table and chairs. "B"units are about half the size, with a tub/shower combo, partial kitchen with a two-burner hot plate, and two chairs an...Read More

After a long trip on our way to Vacation Village, a full parking lot at the Dakota Restaurant late on a Sunday evening was incentive enough for us to agree that it was time to stop. A rustic log cabin on the outside - appropriate for a steakhouse - the decor continues inside. This large restaurant is so well designed that it makes you feel welcomed, cozy, and relaxed. The Dakota is divided into many smaller areas with half walls, branches, large timber logs, and showcases of Indian artifacts. Large moose, elk, and deer heads hang on the walls, along with wooden skis and snowshoes. It is a large restaurant with a small feel. A pleasant hostess offered us a choice of comfy sofas in the entranc...Read More

About 10 miles from Vacation Village is a gourmet market. Guido's is located on the Pittsfield/Lenox line on Route 7. Everyone would love a market like this in their hometown--different merchants share space in one building, but there is a common check-out. The first area that you encounter is fresh produce, much of it grown locally, with all kinds of veggies, and do they look their best all polished and displayed so nicely: white asparagus, haricot vert, all types of mushrooms, miniature squash, and zucchini - I call them gourds. They are very decorative and edible for a special dinner presentation. The meat department has organic and aged meats, some marinated or stuffed and ready to bake ...Read More

Chocolatier

Story/Tip

The Lenox Shops shopping area does not look especially inviting from the road - but we were searching for Internet access. We drove through and instead found Chocolatier. This small shop makes all their desserts and chocolate. They promote their venue with a saying such as, "When you've had an overdose of coffee and it's not yet time for a drink - chocolate will fill the bill." We entered and saw an immaculate stainless kitchen enclosed in glass with a pastry chef doing his thing: heating a knife on a flame to make a clean cut on a tray of brownies topped with ganache. To your right is a very charming area, part tea room and part nightclub. Three or four light wood tables with colonia...Read More
