New Jersey Journals

South Jersey under $40 a day

An August 2005 trip to New Jersey by cindylou11157

Quote: Sick of over priced meals with very small portions? Take a ride off shore and you will find larger portions for a better price. My journals are about inexpensive restaurants with good portions and a good price just outside of the shore towns.

Vita Bella

Restaurant

Quote:
This small take-out pizzeria offers outstanding pizza, including gourmet, plus a great variety of pasta dishes and sandwiches. I had some of the best pizza in Italy, but I would put this right up with them. I usually order the gourmet pizza. My favorite is the marinara. The pizza is topped with chunks of fresh tomatoes, slices of onion and mozzarella cheese sprinkled with Italian seasoning. I usually like eating the pizza immediately because I think the crust gets soggy in the box. So I will sit outside at the picnic tables. (Vita Bella is only takeout with two small tables inside and picnic tables outside. Gourmet pizza runs about $10 each. Regular pizza runs $7 each. They usually run specials on the...Read More

Giuseppe’s

Restaurant

Quote:
Giuseppe’s is known for its unusual menu. The choices are overwhelming. The way the menu works is you pick your pasta, your sauce and your toppings. The choices of pasta are your normal spaghetti, angle hair, bow ties, rigatoni and so on and so on. If you think the choices of pasta is a lot wait until you see the choices of sauces and toppings. Over ten choices of sauces from plain marinara to blush with garlic and basil. But then it even gets more confusing. There is a list of toppings from mushrooms, peppers, olives, onion to mussels, clams, shrimp and on and on. You can just tell them what you like and it will make it a lot easier. This place has good prices, great choices and good food. ...Read More

Smitty's Clam Bar

Restaurant

Quote:
Smitty’s Clam Bar in Somers Point is a South Jersey tradition (just over the bridge outside of Ocean City). This restaurant has good food and low prices. Most people in South Jersey will stop at Smitty’s while they are on vacation. When you pull up to the bar, don’t be deceived by the shack-like building. There is NO air-conditioning, only fans and no fancy tablecloths, here, but Smitty’s has some of the best clam chowder. I would put this right up with the chowder you get in Boston, and the cost is only $2 a cup. What a deal. Another specialty is their daily baked dishes. You have a choice of different sauces (like garlic or lemon butter). The baked dish includes shrimp, scallops, and flound...Read More

Red Sky Cafe

Restaurant

Quote:
Red Sky Café specializes in Southwestern cuisine. The restaurant is done in a very colorful Southwestern décor and is very small, so be prepared to wait. They recently added on an enclosed porch for dining, but in the heat of the summer, it can be a little hot. You can order anything from fajitas to burgers to burritos to gumbo. My favorite is their crab cakes breaded in blue tortilla chips with some kind of special sauce. Check out the blackboard for specials. There is a chili special every day with a pasta dish and usually some type of fish as an entrée. This restaurant is B.Y.O.B. Most dinners run from $10 to under $20. Red Sky is located in Seaville on Route 9, about 10 minutes out of Sea ...Read More

Lobster House Restaurant & Bar

Restaurant | "Lobster House"

Quote:
The Lobster House is another South Jersey tradition. I think it is way overpriced and overcrowded if you eat in the regular dining room. The Lobster House has takeout. You have the same or better selection as in the main dining room, but you pay half the price. You can take your meal and sit in the back on picnic tables by the bay and have the same ocean view as if you ate in the main dining room.

The takeout menu has sandwiches, fried platters, and broiled platters. They are all $15 or less. Also, there is a raw clam bar in the back you can buy from á la carte. This is an affordable way to take your family out.

Marge's Diner

Restaurant

Quote:
Are you sick of paying outrageous prices for breakfast, costing over $20 for two?? Take a ride over the causeway. Marge’s Diner is located on Route 9 in Clermont, just minutes away from Avalon and Sea Isle. This small diner offers everything from pancakes to omelets.

I usually get their pancakes. They are as good as or better than the famous Uncle Bills, and a full stack runs under $4. For weight watchers, they have sugarless syrup and turkey sausage. Marge’s is open 7 days a week. (They do offer lunch and dinner.)
