A September 2005 trip to Boyne by tigges

This is our third trip to Boyne Mountain, and we find it to be a great resort in an excellent location.

Best Things Nearby:

My favorite thing is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, about 86 miles away. There is also Petoskey, the cross in the woods (near Indian River), Traverse City, the Cherry Street Market in Kalkaska, and just the resort itself.

Best Things About the Resort:

It is very clean and quite new, the people are friendly, the scenery is great, and it is in a good location.

Resort Experience:
All units have a fireplace and the one-bedroom is plenty big for a couple. Everything is in excellent condition. The pool is very nice and the hot tub is inside but has patio doors on two sides, so if the weather is warm, they can be left open to the pool. One of the ski hills is right behind the resort. It is a nice walk to the Boyne Mountain Resort and worth the walk. We were told that as members, we could use the facilities there as well.

Restaurant

It is across the street from the golf course. There are golfers who come in, so it is not necessary to dress up. The food is good, but the view is divine. If you are there when the sun sets, there is a beautiful view of the sun going down over Deer Lake. You can sit at your table and watch the ducks in the lake. They also have an outside patio where they serve, weather permitting. It is the atmosphere that I liked the most.

Restaurant

This is a nice place to eat with a lot of atmosphere. While you are waiting for your food, they come around with hot biscuits that are delicious. The fish is excellent because it is fresh every day. They serve lunch and dinner. See www.cityparkgrill.com.

This is an old-fashioned cafe. They do a lot of take-out orders, which is what we had. It seemed like we got a lot of food for our money, and it was good. See www.roastandtoast.com.

If you are really ambitious, you can climb the 400-foot dune. It is a strenuous climb, but the walk down is not bad. Most people take off their shoes (we did). The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is about 7 1/2 miles long and well worth the price. There are outstanding views of Lake Michigan. Some require a little walking but not much. It is one of my favorite places in the area.

Lake Street MarketBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

This is an old-fashioned deli on Lake Street in Boyne City, which is only about 6 or 7 miles from the resort. They have fresh bread and pastries, specialty beers and wines, and a nice variety of meats and cheeses. They also have a nice selection of healthy snack foods, chips, and crackers, and they will make you a sandwich while you wait. We had some excellent sandwiches for about $6 each and took some delicious ham and turkey back with us. See lakestreetmarket.com.

Cross in the WoodsBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

This is a beautiful, inspirational monument in Indian River, MI, about 36 miles from the Boyne Mountain Resort. There is a very large outdoor crucifix, a beautiful church, outdoor stations of the cross, a museum, and a gift shop. If this is your kind of thing, it is definitely worth the drive. See www.crossinthewoods.com.
