The largest town in the area, Abilene is a good base for exploring parts of Texas that few ever see.

Awake in AbileneBest of IgoUgo

Overview

Abilene is doing it's best to grow and become more welcoming in the new century. I had a great time exploring the town and seeing it's best parts.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

For a good walking tour, start at the old train station downtown which is also the local tourism information center. Pick up one of the maps and explore from there.

Abilene ZooBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Giraffe!
This is an old style zoo, where people can and do get quite close to the animals. Not the grand habitat of some of the "super zoos" like San Diego, but intimate and very friendly. Inexpensive and easily accessible I think it's a great stop for anyone who wants a break and would like to see the animals up close.

Attraction

Exterior
On the National Register of Historic Places, the Paramount has been wonderfully preserved and is a great example of a classic theater palace. I suggest taking the walking tour and checking the schedule. Classic movies and theater events are frequent.
