Ostriches
I went on a tour in the off-season - what good luck! Instead of a large coach, we were in a minivan with only five people, and I got to ride up front beside the driver. We visited the penguins and the baboons on the way down to the Cape.

lone penguin
It was a surprise to me to find penguins in such a warm climate. But I learned that the water is not very warm, as the influence of the Indian Ocean does not overcome the cold Atlantic Ocean waters until quite a bit farther north up the coast. The penguins are called "Jackass" because they have a braying call.

Hout Bay
At Hout Bay we transferred to a boat for a trip out to see the seal colony. Seals are nothing new for someone who lives on the west coast of Canada, but the scenery was wonderful and worth the trip.

Baboon SightingsBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Baboons"

Baboon family
The baboons are absolutely aware that they are in control. They will sit on the road blocking traffic, even on the hood of your car. The driver warned us strongly not to open the windows, as baboons have been known to invade the autos of the unwary, and they're strong, with sharp teeth!

Attraction | "Muizenberg"

beach huts
It was fall when I visited, so no one was on the beach. My friends told me that the water was not really warm enough for swimming. I was intrigued by the bathing huts - very English. Apparently they are rented by the season and very hard to come by. The white sand and the long rollers were so beautiful, but it was windy!

Story/Tip

Table Mountain #1
This is the most well-known image of Cape Town - the massive form of Table Mountain that serves as a backdrop to the city. The fog rolls over the top of the mesa like a waterfall; it's magical. The cable car will not run in windy conditions. If the wind gets really bad, a horn sounds to warn tourists to return to the cable car, as it will stop running and you could find yourself having to descend on foot.
