Picture Perfect Ogunquit

A travel journal to Ogunquit by AnnaBissell

Years of family day trips to Ogunquit have helped us fall in love with this quaint New England town. Window shopping, great dining, and beautiful coastline help to make this town special.

  • 6 reviews
Perkins Cove is one of the most beautiful Harbors in New England. Spend an afternoon here window shopping and be sure to come back at night for dinner. Take a short car ride south on 1A to see Nubble Light. The most photographed lighthouse in the U.S..

Quick Tips:

Late Spring and Early Fall are the best times to visit here. It tends to be extraordinarily crowded here in the Summer. Everything closes in November, so planning a winter trip may be a bit boring.

Best Way To Get Around:

Public Trolleys run from downtown to Perkins Cove. A car is essential for day trips to Freeport and Boothbay Harbor!

Cliff House Resort & SpaBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "The Cliff House"

Clean and spacious with breathtaking ocean views. You will be hard pressed to find a panorama like this again. The dining room is good, but expensive. The hotel is halfway between Ogunquit and York. York Beach is great for kids with its candy shops, arcade and York''s Wild Kingdon amusement park. The hotel is built on a sheer cliff. There is no beach.

Barnacle Billy'sBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Barnacle Billy's Etc."

Billy's is great for local seafood, not to mention the incredible harbor views. They have the best lobster rolls around! The real specialty here is seafood, though they do offer some other selections. The chowder and onion rings here are wonderful. Service is always excellent. Be sure and arrive early because I don't believe that they take reservations! If you want the same quality food with less fanfare check out the original Barnacle Billy's next door for dining in the rough.

Marginal WayBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "The Marginal Way"

The Marginal Way is a path that winds its way along a sheer cliff that drops straight into the sea. This has to be one of the most beautiful walking paths in all of New England. It starts right in the Perkins Cove parking area. Be sure and bring a loved one and your camera. You will want pictures. If you're lucky and are there off season you may see seals.

Attraction

This is the boat if you want to catch plenty of fish. You will never be on a charter bost with a more knowldgeable captain and crew! If you go on the all day trip bring raingear. It gets wet! This is all bottom fishing for cod, haddock, and pollock, wolffish, hake, cusk and the like. The mate will fillet your catch for you. Live release is also encouraged.

Attraction

It's a forty five minute trip straight up 95, but well worth it. You will not believe the scope of merchandise available here. Whether you need climbing equipment or a new couch for your living room, you will find it at LL Bean. Be sure to check out the factory store, just across the street and sown the hill. Great bargains can be found there. Freeport is full of other brand name outlets including North Face, The GAP, J Crew, Bass Patagonia, and many many more!It is truly a great rainy day destination.
