Enjoying the

A September 2005 trip to Bandera by wmdemarais

I just returned from visiting the Hill Country in Texas. Enjoy a 45-minute drive to the border of San Antonio and other quaint towns along picturesque back roads. The local townspeople we met were outgoing and extremely friendly.

Overview

Bandera is the "Cowboy Capital" of the Country. A small friendly town with old store fronts and vast farmland. If you want to see a child riding a saddled steere-this is the place. Enjoy a day trip to Fredricksburg for a day's worth of shopping. Visit the "Nimitz" museum. Visit "Gruene" and enjoy dinner in a converted Cotton Grist Mill. Don't forget about San Antonio--major sights and loads of shopping!

Quick Tips:

Ask the car rental place for recommendations, maps, and coupons. In each town you visit, look for their booklets located in stores and restaurants.

Best Way To Get Around:

Car is the only way to go. You can take trollies and buses in San Antonio, but a lot of places are within walking distance in the old village area.
Best Things Nearby:
Town of Bandera, Town of Fredricksburg, and San Antonio.

Best Things About the Resort:
Located outside of a small town. Situated in a private setting. Interior of the condo is spacious. Resembles a log home and is decorated Southwest. Has a nice pool. Easy access to San Antonio.

Resort Experience:
When you first begin to approach, you drive through a subdivision. You then drive over a river that was currently dried up but still following in another location. As you drive up the hill to the condos, the road is currently under construction. There are only four buildings, with a total of 32 units, I believe. There is nothing around you but the hillside landscape and Mother Nature. The office/activity center has a very nice pool located behind it. There are large Texas grills for your use.

We stayed in a one-bedroom that was a nice size and had a private porch, along with a huge fireplace. The bathroom was large. However, I didn't like the whirlpool/shower being one unit. I cannot imagine an older person being able to climb into the whirlpool tub. The bed mattress caused me backaches, but the room was nice. The patio, which you could enter from the bedroom or living room, was a plus. The worse thing was the nonexistence of insulation between the units in the ceiling. We had two hardy young children staying above us. It was annoying but tolerable once mentioned.
