Philadelphia - A Home Grown City

A travel journal to Philadelphia by MalervyC

I lived in Philadelphia for 21 years until moving to 'The Burbs'. This journal is about the wonderful places and events that happen in this beautiful, historic city I call home.

Maggiano's Little ItalyBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Maggiano's"

I went to Maggiano's for my birthday. Food was excellent, with huge portions and great service. We made reservations two weeks in advance. I had the chicken parm with penne paradiso, and it was fabulous! I recommend this place for a first date, a night out with the girls, or an anniversary.

Dantonio's PizzaBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Great Cheesesteak Debate"

One of the longest standing feuds in Philly - Pat's or Geno's? The two steak stands are diagonal from each other. Who was there first? Who makes the faster sandwich? Who makes the BETTER sandwich? Well, I am a Philly native, and I can say I've been to the corner of Pat's and Geno's only once in my whole life. The thing about cheesesteaks is that every Philly neighborhood has their own place--only tourists go to the Cheesesteak Intersection (as some of us call it). It all depends on where you are in the city. My recommendation? Dantonio's Pizza on the corner of Rector and Manayunk Ave in the city's Manayunk/Roxborough section. I was weaned off of these things, and I cannot help but root for my home team.

Franklin Institute Science MuseumBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Franklin Institute and Science Museum"

The Franklin Institute was my favorite field trip in school and now that I'm older, I like going back there and seeing all the new attractions. The Institute is near the Avenue of the Arts in downtown Philly. Just this year, the Titanic exibit was featured. The Turtleman Ominverse Theatre shows features on Everest, sharks, and has really awesome laser light shows. The Planetarium always seems to be under repair, but I remember being a kid and staring up into the fake sky, wishing that when I grew up, I could be an astronaut. The most popular attractions are the Heart, the Locomotive, the plane exhibit that allows you to sit in actual fighter jets, and the weather center, where you can build your own tornado out of mist. Parents - bring your kinds here. This place rocks!

Only been inside this place once, and I was in for about 20 minutes before I got horribly bored. Okay, okay--so I'm not a big art buff, but running up those museum steps never gets old.

Philadelphia ZooBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

My favorite exibit is the Reptile House. I'm not one for holding snakes, but I think they are beautiful creatures. The polar bear pool is another big attraction, mostly because there is an underground window into the tank where you can see the bears playing in the water.

Betsy Ross HouseBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Betsy Ross's House"

Betsy Ross, as history tells, made the first flag of the United States of America. That claim is now contested, but if you're in Philly, this is a nice place to go if you have a spare hour. Thank goodness it's air-conditioned, because in the summer, it's HOT! The Betsy Ross House is very different from most historical sites. The entire house is preserved with the same furniture and decor as when good ole Betsy lived here. All the rooms are encased, and you take a walking tour inside. Creep factor - she's buried outside, and tourists toss pennies on her grave for good luck. I never, ever understood this.

Independence HallBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Unlike the movie National Treasure, you cannot climb on the roof of Independence Hall. You can, however, enjoy the historical and political importance it played in our nation's upbringing. It's true--all those old geezers we call our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence inside this place. Most kids can't appreciate it, but if you are a history buff, you can definitely get the adrenaline rush that is building a nation of free people.

Liberty BellBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Ah, the Libery Bell. The crack seems to be so big, it's hard to imagine that a simple ringing could produce such a fault line. The significance of the bell is bigger that the actual building it's kept in. The lines seem to be really long here, and after all, it's just a big bell. The building is made of glass, so if you stand outside, you can still get a good photo.

ShampooBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Shampoo is a great club, but I have only been there on Friday nights for Gay Night. There is an amazing drag show that's so entertaining, you'll be talking about it for years. Shampoo has the best dance/club music. Drinks are well priced and there are four bars to choose from. The outside Groove Garden is where the occasional foam parties happen. The only minus about this place are the unisex bathrooms, not my thing. What makes this a great time is being there with great people. There aren't many lesbians here, mostly gay men. Shampoo was featured many a times on the "Real World;" it was the party spot for Willie and Karomo.

The Bike RaceBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

The "Bike Race, as it's known in Philly, occurs right around Memorial Day every year. Bike Race Sunday is one of the biggest events around the Roxborough/Manayunk area. The streets are shut down, and people open their homes and fry up their barbecues for this day. The race, which draws competitors from all over the world, starts in Downtown Philadelphia. There are two races, one for the men, and one for the women. They bike Kelly Drive, through Fairmount Park, then onto the streets of Manayunk, then back down Kelly Drive to Center City, and then repeat the route a few times.

Manayunk has some killer hills, but the fiercest is the WALL. On a map, it's listed as Lyceum Avenue, but to everyone in the city it's "Da Wall". It's steep incline is usually where most cyclists meet their demise. Philly's own weather forecaster Cecily Tynan tried going up the Wall a few years ago, but had to bail out due to difficulty. I'm not knocking her either, I can barely WALK up it.

In all of the 24 years I've lived in Roxborough/Manayunk, I've never actually seen the start of a race... I'm usually asleep when they start. The news helicopters flying in the air wake me up.

Almost everyone who lives on the Wall throws a party. People are drinking, eating, cheering on the racers, laughing, and just enjoying the day. To experience true Philadelphia hospitality, you have to be in Manayunk for the Bike Race. I promise it's an experience you will never forget.
