Velas Vallarta

A September 2005 trip to Puerto Vallarta by Deannahi

We went to Puerto Vallarta in early September and had a great time. The resort was very clean, the food was great, the room was awesome, and the service was excellent. We would definitely go back.

Overview

We went to a restaurant called Las Camelitas on the top of a mountain (just tell any cab driver the name; they know it). The road was very narrow and kind of scary, but the cab ride from downtown was well worth it. This restaurant is all outdoors and offers a 360-degree view of Puerto Vallarta. Be there at sunset and you will get an amazing view! If it is raining, save this for another day. And bring the bug spray!

Quick Tips:

If you want to snorkel or scuba dive, don't go to Puerto Vallarta during the rainy season. The water is dirty and visibility is less than 25 feet. I didn’t even get into the water. My husband did one drive and said that he couldn't see anything.

Best Way To Get Around:

We took taxis everywhere. There were no problems but also no air-conditioning, except “Mexican air-conditioning” (four windows rolled down). If you require A/C, don't come here. The resort was well air-conditioned but no vehicle or store we went in had air conditioning.
Best Things Nearby:
The marina is close by. We walked there each evening as something to do.

Best Things About the Resort:
Very clean!

Resort Experience:
We had reservations for a studio suite but were upgraded to a one-bedroom suite upon arrival since it was slow. This suite is AWESOME. The kitchen is huge and there is a nice dinette area and a large living room. The bedroom is a nice size. There was a TV in the living room and the master bedroom, as well as sliders that led to the very large patio. We saw the studios, and they do not have patios or balconies and seemed small. I would not recommend them and doubt that we would be raving about the resort as much had we been in the studio instead of the one-bedroom suite.

This is an all inclusive resort, so we ate most meals there. The food was five-star quality. We were never disappointed with a meal we ordered. We toured another resort while in town and liked Velas much better because it was small and comfortable. The walk to the two restaurants only takes 5 minutes, with no hills, unlike many others. We would definitely come back.

The view from the restaurant is excellent. It is located right on the beach and completely open-air. One thing to note is that we had dinner there after sunset one night and the mosquitoes were awful. I got bit over 25 times in 30 minutes. We had no problems with mosquitoes except this one evening, and we figured it was because we went there after sunset.
