Trails of Finger Lakes, NY

A January 2001 trip to Finger Lakes by TrailExpert

The Finger Lakes region is known for its lakes, hills and wineries. Nestled among the hills are great trails for hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing.

Picture glacially sculpted hills with long, narrow lakes nestled in the valleys. The hillsides are covered with forests and expanses of vineyards. Deep fissures are cut through the earth as water rushed to the lakes below leaving behind cascading waterfalls. Through this fairyland winds many trails, some open only to hikers and some welcoming bicyclists. In winter they get blanketed in deep white snow, a welcome mat for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

Add to the mix, a spattering of small towns each with unique Bed and Breakfast Inns and you begin to get the feel for the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. There are no mountains to climb but there are plenty of hills that will get your heart pounding and also lots of abandoned railroad beds that have been turned into trails, offering level but scenic terrain for the outdoor adventurer. I invite you to visit my paradise. Just be sure to bring your hiking boots, bicycle, or skis.
