Serendiptiously Stockholm

A July 2005 trip to Stockholm by jl32

I took a weekend off from the bustle of work in London to breathe the fresh air and soak up the culture of the Swedish capital.

Stuck in Arlanda? Could be worse. Especially if you take to the Radisson to rest up before your flight. It has a towering presence over the bustle of SkyCity--Stockholm's concessions and shopping inside the airport. Of course, you can always do what I have also done in the past--sleep on those incredibly comfy chairs in terminal.

Headliner Lauryn Hill gave an amazing performance and the atmosphere was very Euro-cool. Splitting my time between Chicago and London, I see no shortage of good jazz. This wasn't amazing musically, but was a good time and a whole lot of fun. If you are a music snob, you might not be happy with all of the lineup, but the fresh air and sunshine of Stockholm in the summer makes this event a whole lot of fun. Catch it again between the second and third week of July in 2006.

Chicago has Marshall Field's on State Street. London has Harrod's. And Stockholm, a city that knows how to shop, shop, shop, has NK. It is massive and all-encompassing. Every thing from T-shirts to tobacco are all for sale, and like the rest of this city, it's all very trendy and cutting edge. With currency exchange, bookstores, sport stores, English speaking staff, and cafes abound, NK might feel more like a small airport than a typical department store. And that's because, after all, NK aims to be way more than your average store--and the service proves this continually. NK is a Stockholm establishment and worth seeing, though unless you want to go dig through the store's sales racks, most of the stuff is a little expensive.

Attraction

It's big and beautiful and oh-so-Swedish. Sure, it's no Prado or Louvre, but rather one of many great museums to check out in Stockholm. It's a sight to see and a look into Swedish culture you should definately take advantage of. Right now runs a comprehensive exhibit on Swedish folk art.

If you come in from Arlanda, you'll probably want to take the Arlanda Express. 15 minutes after leaving the airport, you'll be at Central Station, with brings you a picturesque point in the city. Right next door, is the Stadhuset, which is ornately beautiful--Scandic in design with a red tower adorned with a shimmering gold steeple atop a blue column. It's outstanding to look at and emblematic of this city and it's classical archetecture you'll see all around and asbolutely love. Tours are offered and worth looking into.
