A June 2005 trip

Meersburg is an old town just about 40 minutes away, with about the prettiest marketplace and buildings that we have seen on our trip. From there take the ferry across the beautiful Boden See. On the ferry you are looking at three countries, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Then go to Mainau, which is a large public garden open to the public and the former residence of the brother to the former king of Sweden. It is well worth a day’s visit. The gardens are fantastic and there are many buildings and restaurants open to the public.
We walked up to Oberstaufen one evening to have dinner at a casual outdoor restaurant called the Kaffee, Tee & Saft Bar, because we had been in the afternoon and had made a reservation. The hostess had a table complete with linens, candles, and flowers reserved for us, and the ladies were given soft blankets to wrap about our shoulders. We had wonderful service and great food. She came along after the meal with complimentary choices of local aperitifs. When we left, the hostesses both came out to hug us and wish us a happy journey.
When we arrived that evening, we discovered that the staff had prepared our table with linens, flowers, candles and pretzels. We felt really special, since this is a casual patio café, and the other tables were just bare with plastic chairs. We listened to a man play an electric organ and sing, and our waitress seated us and brought out lovely soft blankets for the women and wrapped them about our shoulders. There were two waitresses looking after us, and we were made to feel very special.
The meals were good food, not fancy, but nice local fare, and we ordered steaks and some of us had spare ribs. We also had corn on the cob and 'Rosti-Ecken' (a potato cake, much like a McDonald’s hash brown patty).
After dinner, the waitress brought us sorbet for dessert and then came around with an assortment of after-dinner Schnapps-type drinks. When we left, both our waitresses hugged us and wished us a great vacation. This is a basic and casual little café, but that evening was one of the nicest experiences of our whole week!

Attraction | "Day Trip to the Isle of Flowers"
This is just a huge manicured public garden with many exotic and beautiful plants, flowers and trees. We thoroughly enjoyed our day. When we left we drove back along Lake Constance through Switzerland and Austria and back over the mountain into Germany to our Resort. It was a beautiful drive, and the view going over the mountain from Austria into Germany was just spectacular and only took us a little longer time.

If you want fresh breads for breakfast, the bakery is open from 7-9am daily, but go early! We saw people coming from there even before 7am. We also found that if we had any questions about any attractions, the resort staff were very helpful, and they even confirmed our reservation with our next resort for us when we were leaving. There is also a resort tourist tax, which is charged when you check out and is 2.50 Euro/person/day and 1.25 Euro/person/day for children between the ages of 6 and 14.
