Oberstaufen is noted for its beautiful, quaint mountain setting, restaurants, and shops. It’s a great place to visit for several days. The walking trails and the views from them are spectacular. If you want to shop farther afield, you can drive to Rothenburg, about 2 hours away but worth it. This town is one of the most intact and original, with a moat around it and large, thick walls into the town. It’s famous for its Christmas shops and romantic inns. Another old town in the area and within an hour is Wangen, which is lovely with its quaint marketplace, and it has more upscale shops and designer outlets, such as The United Colors of Benetton. We found many good buys right in Oberstaufen, and th...Read More

This is a casual outdoor cafe in the quaint town of Oberstaufen. My husband and I had been exploring the town all week while we stayed at the Mondi Holiday Resort in nearby Malas. We stopped in for a cold drink and got talking with the friendly staff and decided that our group of six should come back that evening for dinner. We made reservations, although they are definitely not needed there. When we arrived that evening, we discovered that the staff had prepared our table with linens, flowers, candles and pretzels. We felt really special, since this is a casual patio café, and the other tables were just bare with plastic chairs. We listened to a man play an electric organ and sing, and our wa...Read More

This is a grand garden open to the public and the residence of the brother of the former King of Sweden. His name was Leonard Bernadote, and he married a commoner and lost his Title. The island and gardens date back to 1827. Hungarian Prince Esterházy designed the present-day courtyard and planted precious exotic and domestic flowers. In 1853, Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden acquired the island as a summer residence. Today the grounds and parts of the Castle as well as Family Church and many restaurants and conservatories are open to the public from 7am until 20:00 daily during the season and if you arrive after 16:00 it is half price admission. To get there from the East (Oberstaufen) area take A7...Read More

If you are going to stay at this resort, just a note; it is not easy to find if you are arriving a little late, as we were. The RCI instructions said to go toward Steibas, but if you get that far, then you've passed it. The resort is actually in a place called Malas, and when you see the Malas sign, look to your left and the resort entrance and sign is right there. We also had Mapquest directions, which helped us a lot. Another tip; if you want the best views, the smaller balconied units are the best - I believe all the two-bedroom units are ground level, and they do not have as panoramic vistas. We particularly loved to walk into Oberstaufen to eat at one of the lovely restaurants and then walk ...Read More
