St. Augustine--A Great Day Trip

Overview

There are many highlights in St. Augustine. There is The Fort, "The Oldest Schoolhouse in the US," The Fountain of Youth (very tourist-oriented), the people-watching on St. George's Street, the discount shopping at the malls... just to name a few.Quick Tips: 1. Avoid St. Augustine when the Florida Gators football team has a home game. Most hotels are sold out. 2. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will do a lot of walking. 3. Bring your camera. You will find great photos all along the historic streets of this city. Best Way To Get Around: St. Augustine is a great city to walk in. However, driving has never been a problem around town. And, if those don't peak your interest...Read More

This hotel has been one of the best ones I have stayed at in the St. Augustine area. The hotel itself is outside of St. Augustine and is rather close to Jacksonville. However, the drive is a very nice one to and from St. Augustine. The hotel parking can be a bit confusing, but once we found it, everything was great. The lobby was grand. It was colored in calm cream tones. And in the center of it all were palm trees and different types of plants native to the area. Our room had the same tones as the lobby, cream walls with accents of color. Our room had two queen-size beds and had a connecting room door. That worked out great since our other part of the group was in the room next to us. Th...Read More

IF you are on a budget (and if you’re not), you should eat here for lunch at least once. The Spanish Bakery is this little hole-in-the-wall place behind a fudge shop on St. George's Street. The address tells you how small it is, since it's at 42 1/2. Come lunchtime, you can smell the scent of fresh bread baking. And that draws you in. Inside the small building, you see your choices. They have a combo deal of one bowl of soup (soup of the day: picadillo (love this), chicken noodle, and sometimes potato), a roll, a can of soda, and a cookie, OR you can get Spanish empanadas or a smoked sausage roll with the above for $5 (last time I was there). They also allow you to purchase one entire lo...Read More

I LOVE THIS PLACE. Let me explain why. For me, my budget is what I live by. San Sabastian Winery is a great place for a person on a budget. Located not too far from the historic center of St. Augustine, the winery offers free wine tasting and tours throughout the day. They give you the correct tools to understand wine and what foods work best with certain wines.

The wines there are very good, but very reasonably priced, AND, for those bulk purchasers, they offer discounts per case of wine. You can't beat a bottle of great red wine or port for $20. That’s what keeps me coming back, along with the quality they provide and the knowledge that they won't bust the bank.

St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum

No matter where you go in St. Augustine, you can always see the lighthouse in the distance. When you visit the lighthouse and the grounds, it gets even better. However, like everything it seems these days, it does cost to get in. The cost to go on the grounds and museum is $5, and for the museum and lighthouse is $7.50. I chose to stay on the ground as the rest of my group went up the lighthouse. On the walk through the museum, I learned of how the lighthouse was made and what is being done to keep it in great condition. It is very informational and interesting to learn the history of this place. If you are okay with climbing a few hundred steps, I would recommend going to the top, but if you...Read More

Like the St. Augustine lighthouse, the Ponce Inlet lighthouse is equally as interesting. Again, I chose to keep my feet firmly on the ground as the group went to the top. The cost for this lighthouse was $5 for the lighthouse and grounds. Like St. Augustine's lighthouse, the grounds give you an idea of how life was in the past when people worked in and around the area. The nautical feel is everywhere, from the restored boat in the back to the compass and ship lights.

Overall, you can't beat it since it's part of history and can be a nice respite from the crazy traffic on I-95.

This is the heart of historic St. Augustine. When walking into St. George Street, you will pass a gated cemetery. It’s very creepy, but cool at the same time. As you walk down the street, you will see "The Oldest Schoolhouse in the US," which is also a bit creepy but cool. There are little isles you can go down and some unique shopping, everything from jewelry to antique photos. There is even a place to buy swords and open clams to get a pearl. There are also a ton of places to grab a snack. Between the little restaurants, candy shops (check out the candy apples), coffee shops, and regular shops, you can spend most of your day here. Check out the other side streets that come off St. George...Read More
