Los Cabos - Baja California Sur

An August 2005 trip to Los Cabos by delcielo

This was our first trip to Baja. We went during the off-season, which turned out to be the best thing ever! There were no crowds, and we even lucked out with no rain and clear skies. Our experience was unbelievably fabulous!

Marbella Suites on the Beach
This hotel was amazing. We got a deluxe junior suite, which is one-bedroom suite with an ocean view (room A56). It had one loveseat and one sofa bed, a partial kitchen (sink, mini-fridge, plates, glasses, cutlery, and microwave), a dining table, a shower and vanity, and a large separate bedroom with a double bed, alarm clock, and safe. The property also had a multimedia room with about six really nice computer stations that have high-speed Internet connections. There is a big-screen satellite television room with Ping-Pong and foosball tables, a telephone room with free calls to the US, and a well appointed gym. Each and every staff member, from the front desk to housekeeping, was professional and very friendly.

My favorite thing about this place is that it was so quiet and laid-back. There are a good number of stairways in this place, but if you take them slowly, about one per second, you shouldn't have any problem. Hey, what's the rush, anyway? The pool was wonderful, refreshing, and clean, and the beach (with two palapas and several lounge chairs) was just steps away. Although it is a non-swimming beach due to strong undertows, I found that just wading in knee-deep and watching the waves from the shore were enough. I must not forget to mention the restaurant, which has excellent Mexican food from morning until night. The service was always great and accommodating.

Please note that we did go during the off-season (August), so perhaps many of the experiences written here won't apply during the high season. However, during the week we were there, I don't think the hotel had many more than 10 rooms filled at any one time. In fact, we had the entire pool and hot tubs all to ourselves every single night!

Final story: One day, we walked down the beach to the neighboring resort called Dreams. We were just curious if we were missing something by not going to a big resort. But, after being charged $4 for a tiny bottle of water, seeing the crowded pool area, watching irritated people waiting in line at the restaurants, and hearing unintelligible pop music blaring, we were so happy we chose the place we did. That said, we are happy clams.

We had the grilled lobster tail with drawn butter and shrimp with garlic butter. Both came with creamed spinach and rice. We had one bottle of water and one margarita. Our bill, including gratuity, was $100.

The service was rushed but attentive, maybe too attentive. The food was good but nothing spectacular. The ambience was nice; we sat outside. The bottom line is that we left hungry, poor, and a bit disappointed.

This place, although right on the main drag (Lazaro Cardenas) across from the Paraiso Mall, is a welcome haven from the hustle-and-bustle of Cabo! Fumari serves wonderful espresso drinks and has a wide assortment of hookah. The ambience couldn't be better. There is a beautiful rooftop lounge area with lanterns, sofas, and coffee tables. It is a very clean, relaxing environment with great music. The staff is truly superb, as was the whole experience from start to finish.
