The first impression you get on seeing the tower is not, as you would expect, "Wow, that tower's leaning," but, "Holy shit, the leaning tower of Pisa isn't the only building around." In fact, it is part of a cathedral complex. Work on the tower was started in 1173 and took almost 200 years to complete.
