Kauai 2004

A June 2004 trip to Lihue by EmyRose

We had a great time on Kauai. We think this island is one of the most beautiful places on earth. We particularly enjoyed hiking, surfing, taking a catamaran to see Na Pali, and visiting the lovely and interesting botanical gardens.

Best Things Nearby:
Ocean, Lihue, Botanical Gardens, Waimea Canyon

Best Things About the Resort:
Tennis courts, nice units, lanai, nice pool, chickens

Resort Experience:
This is a very attractive resort located on a beach that is lovely, but not safe for swimming. We enjoyed the pool, though, and went to nearby public beaches to swim in the ocean. The kitchen is very well-equipped; it even had a rice cooker.

In our opinion, the only downside to the resort is that is is adjacent to property where people enjoy riding dirt bikes and ATVs. Between that and the sound of the ubiquitous chickens, one should not plan on sleeping late at this resort. There's so much to see and do, one wouldn't want to sleep late anyway.

Lihue, Beach, Duke's, Grove Farm

Best Things About the Resort:
Pool, tennis courts, convenience to Lihue

Resort Experience:
We had a two-bedroom, two-story unit. Upstairs was a master bedroom and a smaller bedroom. The air-conditioners are on timers so that they cannot be left on continuously. Fortunately, it is usually cool at night in Hawaii. These units are not built to catch the trade winds well, though. There was a large hedge right behind our balcony.

We were not unhappy with our unit though. Its location and the quality of the pool and tennis courts more than made up for any shortcomings.

Story/Tip

Some of the flowers we saw
There are three national tropical botanical gardens on Kauai. If you enjoy plants and flowers and being outside, all three are worth a visit. We particularly enjoyed Allerton Gardens and the gardens on the north side, west of Hanalei Bay.

Waimea CanyonBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Waimea Canyon
The contrast between the deep green of the foliage and the dark red of the earth is amazing. It is one of the most beautiful canyons I have ever seen.

Story/Tip

Spouting Horn
This is a site where the waves force water up through a hole in a lava shelf. It looks like a intermittent fountain or geyser. Sometimes you can see a rainbow in the mist.
