An August 2005 trip
to Grand Canyon by Juliecroff02
Quote: We took a quick trip from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon's South Rim. It was a nice tease to spend just a couple of hours there and see the awe-inspiring sight, it will make you want to book another vacation and truly explore this natural wonder of the world.
At the canyon village, they have shops, a hotel, and a restaurant. We packed a picnic lunch to sit and view the canyon. Make sure you also have plenty of water if you’re here in the summer, as it can get very hot and dry. At the village is the easy rim walks to get the grand overview and trailheads, like the Bright Angel and Plateau Pointe, for those who are more adventurous, but BEWARE the time it takes you to get down the path, as it will take you twice as long to get up, so for hiking make sure you are prepared for it with shoes, water, food, ect. The size makes things look closer than they are, so make sure you have maps with you.
We also took the Desert View Drive. It is about 25 miles, but there are lots of viewing areas along the way. It is the quickest way to get different perspectives. At the viewing area, there is a gas station, restaurant, and bookstore (which is run by the park - all proceeds go back into the care and maintenance of the park).
We had our 8-month-old with us, so long hikes to the bottom, 7 miles, were out of the question. Make sure you have a backpack or something to carry small children in. The rim walks are very stroller-friendly, but if you want to walk a few of the more exciting trails, you'll need a carrier.
If you need handicap assistance, you can go to the information center or bookstore and get a temporary pass. It allows you to park closer to things and even drive where only the shuttle buses can go.
By taking the free shuttle buses, you can get to parts that you can't drive to. You can also drive the Desert View Road to see more quickly.
At the canyon it is free, and they only have to complete one ranger walk and get the ranger to sign their book to get a badge and patch when they are through.
You can ask for the book at any information center. We got ours at the bookstore at the Desert View area.
