Yukon Gold; Dawson City, Yukon

Yukon Gold; Dawson City, Yukon

The first thing that blew my mind was the extensive gold mining that has gone on, and continues today, in the area. Coming up the Klondike River valley, the entire valley floor, anywhere from 2 to 4 miles wide and probably 30 miles long, has been dredge mined, as well as all tributaries to the Klondike River, like Bear Creek, Hunker Creek, Bonanza Creek, and Eldorado Creek. It’s astounding how much glacial material has been sifted through for gold. I can’t guess how many acres of land have been simply turned upside down, from as deep as 40 feet down and into the permafrost.
