The Other Aspen: Vail, CO

A July 2005 trip to Vail by quinius

Quote: All I ever heard about Colorado was Aspen this, Aspen that. I've been to Vail many times now, and there is no reason Vail should not be at the top of Colorado destinations with the year-round activities available at this large-scale resort.

The Other Aspen: Vail, CO

Overview

Quote:
Aspen is definitely not the only large-scale resort in Colorado. I visited Vail for the first time a couple years ago in the summer and was very impressed. The highlight of Vail is that it caters year-round to the tourist. There is always something for you to do, from skiing to golfing and hiking, and of course, not to forget the many five-star restaurants dotting the village. Of course, Vail is not cheap, but I guess that is expected from a large-scale ski resort. If you are looking for a nice relaxing vacation in the mountains any time of year with a range of activities for anyone, then Vail is an excellent choice.Quick Tips: Best Way To Get Around: I would definitely recomme...Read More

Minturn Country Club

Don't think you can come enjoy a monster dinner at this steakhouse after you finish a round of 18, because that will not be possible. There is no golf course to accompany this country club. Yes, it may sound weird, but it's true. The Minturn Country Club is a unique steakhouse about 5 miles from Vail. What makes it unique is the way they prepare the steaks. Their special way is that they don't prepare them, you prepare them. That's right, you walk in and pick your choice of cut from behind the counter, whether it is steak, chicken, or seafood, along with whatever sides you want, and then the meat is yours. They have grills located throughout the restaurant to grill your meat. They will give yo...Read More

Pazzo's Pizzeria

Restaurant | "Pazzo's Pizzaria"

Quote:
It can be a family affair that everyone will enjoy at this semi-hole-in-the-wall restaurant right in the heart of Vail Village. I say "semi" because it is definitely unique, with a fun (loud, but fun) atmosphere, but it is pretty popular around Vail. I've been there when we had to wait an hour and when we could walk right in--it just depends on when you go. The nice thing about Pazzo's is that you can just walk right in after skiing and grab a pizza or take it home and eat in front of the fireplace. Don't think that this is just some cheesy pizza joint, because it's not. To start with, the pizzas are excellent and will send you coming back again and again, the servers are friendly and helpful, an...Read More

Beaver Creek Golf Club

Beaver Creek Golf Club exceeded my expectations and then some. I am not an avid golfer, but I know a good golf course when I see one. My buddy who played with me has been to many great golf courses, and he said that Beaver Creek Golf Club was at the top of his list. There was not one part of the course that wasn't perfectly green, the fairways were cut to perfection, and the greens were manicured like it was a TPC course. There was hardly anyone there when we were playing, which is hard to believe. We only paid $40 for the twilight fee, but that was during the non-peak season. The $40 included a cart and as many range balls we wanted. I believe that during the peak season, it is only open to...Read More

Cotton Ranch Club

Attraction | "Mile High Golfing Part 2: Cotton Ranch"

Quote:
Cotton Ranch has a much different setting than most of the golf courses in the Vail area. It is about 30 miles from Vail, in a countryside setting with fewer trees and mountains. Just because there are not as many trees and elevation changes does not mean you should pass this course off as easy. There is another factor that you need to throw into the equation: the wind. The wind was brutal when we played here. Everything was out in the open, so the wind never went away. For the average golfer like me, a brutal wind will make you have one of the "Ahhh, I didn't keep score today" rounds. The greens and fairways were well kept but not as nice as Beaver Creek. We payed $40 for 18 holes, car...Read More

Everywhere you look as you drive down I-70 is one perfectly manicured golf course after another. Just east of Vail, you will find Vail Golf Club. You can play for a bargain $40 at twilight time during the off-season. As you begin playing, you figure there's no way a course could be greener than the hole you are playing, but somehow, each hole becomes more and more perfect. Golf courses like this are a wonderful place to come and relax later in the day and practice the golf swing. This course is not very difficult, but there are some challenging holes.

Eagle Vail Par 3 Course

Attraction | "Mile High Golfing: Part 4, Eagle Vail Par 3 Course"

Quote:
This is a great course if a group of average golfers is looking to have some fun. It is nice and well-maintained but does not really compare to the other 18-hole courses available throughout Vail. I still had just as much fun at this course as I did at some of the others though. Most of the holes are pretty short, and the upside to that is that it will definitely turn your scorecard into one you will want to keep. You can play for fairly cheap--I believe around $15. It is a great activity for family/friends, but if an experienced golfer is looking for a challenge, then this is not your best shot. Highly recommended for families, though. Another fun thing for kids is to wade in the lake on the c...Read More
