3 days camping in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park

Overview

Camping in the park allowed us to enjoy the mountains without getting caught in the hustle-and-bustle of shopping, traffic, and the electronic media. We were in the Glacier Basin campground. Its facilities were basic, with a level site and nearby running water toilets. But the view was breathtaking, and I began each day just sitting on a bench staring at the gorgeous mountain view. Another highlight was the short (1.9-mile around) hike to Alberta Falls. The falls are beautiful, and the kids enjoyed climbing around on the rocks. We all were awed by the drive up Fall River Road. The condo was spacious. We had a fully equipped kitchen, in addition to nice amenities. The living room area included a couch/futon, they brought in a sleeping pad for our 2nd child, and my wife and I were in the separate bedroom with King bed. Our balcony overlooked a mountain stream, the Fall River. The living/dining area was more than adequate and our bedroom was quite large. The bathroom included a "Jaccuzi-style" tub. We enjoyed a private, scheduled time in the outdoor hot tub. The owners were very friendly and helpful.

This was in a very pleasant setting along a mountain stream on Estes Park's river walk. The food was very good, although not gourmet. The menu had a wide range of choices and accommodated a variety of tastes in our family. The dress was casual and greatly enjoyed by our family.

We took the evening Dinner Cruise, and our whole family (14-year-old girl and 18-year-old boy) enjoyed it greatly! The tour is in a 10-wheel-drive military vehicle up incredible climbs and over deep ruts and huge boulders. The ride is more like an amusement ride, but it is real! The views were some of the best we had during our week stay in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. The meal was a good "mountain meal" of steak, beans, canned peaches, and coleslaw. (Chicken, veggie burger, and hot dogs were alternate options.) Then we had a sing-along around the campfire - just good old-fashioned fun. The tour ended with a ride down the mountain in the dark, which made it all the more exciting. I hig...Read More
