Vieques - Absolutely Beautiful

A July 2005 trip to Vieques by chapparita

Vieques is a great place to go if you're a beach/water lover and want a place to slow down.

We were in Vieques for 3 days, rented a jeep, and explored the beaches. We were so taken with all the gorgeous beaches and the variety of beaches that we did very little else. We left Vieques very relaxed, as there is little to do during the week beyond beach hunt and a little dining.

Quick Tips:

Despite various bad reviews for the Wyndham Martinau Bay, we stayed here. It’s a great hotel, although they do have some inconsistency in their service. The front-desk staff was very helpful, made dinner recommendations, fixed things quickly, etc. The concierge was very helpful and responsive, although she missed an opportunity to really surpass our expectations with a snorkeling trip.

We highly recommend snorkelling with Abe's Snorkelling. We were recommended a morning trip with him where he was our private guide. During this trip, we found out about a 2pm trip, which was more expensive, but also more comprehensive. Abe goes snorkelling via kayaks, which make the trip much more interesting!

We also highly recommend a trip to the Bio Bay, which can be done with Abe in kayaks. Tip - if it rains, they don’t cancel, and it’s actually much, much more beautiful during rain. We missed this opportunity and hope to make it some other time. We would also recommend kayaking versus the glass-bottom boat.

Best Way To Get Around:

Rent a JEEP. You need it to get to beaches. Cars, and definitely scooters, wouldn't be too much fun. All beaches are accessible by dirt roads. Get a map and don't be afraid. It’s virtually impossible to get lost, and the beaches are gorgeous when you find them. Specifically, Sun Beach and Green Beach were great. On Green Beach, to the right is great, but to the left is a little ugly.

The room was gorgeous, and we had an open bathroom with a huge tub next to the bed. We had great views of the ocean and pool. It was very clean and relaxing.

We went for breakfast and found this place to be odd. The owners run the place, and the man who took our order stunk. We were served the main part of our breakfast, ate it, and waited for the bill, then got up to ask for it, as we were tired of waiting, to find that the woman was still working on a fruit salad that we thought she forgot. The couple was fighting while we were there, and the woman/cook/owner yelled "fxxx something" very loud. The eggs, toast, and bacon were fine, but the orange juice was quite strange.

We asked the front desk at the Wyndham where to go for seafood, someplace local, and they sent us here. This is a place the locals eat. The seafood and asopao are great there, as is the service. The folks at the hotel recommended this place, but then at least 3 people mentioned that it was very slow. This was not our experience. We ate there several times and found the service to be quite quick, especially since the food is prepared fresh when you order.
