Best Things Nearby:Olympia, Delphi - nice drives to these places. Visiting Mycenae, Corinth and other sites is doable in a day, but be prepared for lots of highway (some what stressful) driving. All the little villages that you can explore.Best Things About the Resort:Located on the water. Kitchen in the room. If you like gambling, this place is for you (casino on site). Resort Experience:Porto Rio Hotel is located on the outskirts of Patra, Greece. It is quite well signed from the highway and simple to find. The hotel is located on the water, and has a great view. Highway Patra to Athens Photo, Patras, Greece
After exploring the Peloponnese, we headed into Athens. We stayed at a wonderful, small hotel in the heart of the Plaka. We took our rental car back once we checked into our hotel... no sense in keeping it while in the city. When we finally checked into our hotel in Athens, we were sorry we were only staying 2 nights. What a great little place, and it was so close to the Plaka and Syntagma square. It was the Athos hotel on Patroou street. Next time I’m in Athens, I know where I’ll be staying. Our room was on the second floor and the windows opened to a little courtyard below. The rooftop patio is available to all guests and has a gorgeous view of the Acropolis. It’s a great place to meet other gues...Read More

In our 5 days touring the Peloponnese, we travelled to Olympia, Delphi, Mycenae, and Epidaurus, as well as driving through numerous little towns and villages. We arrived in Greece on March 28th 2005 at 5:30 am, after 2 weeks in Egypt. We picked up our rental car (Hertz) and drove to Cape Sounion. No big surprise, but we were the first ones at the site. There is a little restaurant at the base, and we were so happy to sit down and enjoy a cup of Café Americano-very good but expensive (7.50 €). As we stood at the foot of Poseidon’s Temple the wind was incredible and the view was breathtaking (entrance fee, 4 € each). We looked for Byron’s name but couldn’t find it. We left the site at arou...Read More

The Porto Rio Resort is located about 10 to 15 minutes from the downtown of Patra. It is right on the water and has a great view of the bridge to Antirio.

One of our favorite finds in the area was the little square of restaurants, just 2 minutes east of the hotel. We went for several dinners there and really enjoyed the unique coffee shop.

Ancient Places

At Cape Sounion Photo, Patras, Greece
While staying in Patra, we visited many of the ancient sites around northern Greece and the Peloponnese: Olympia, Mycenae, Delphi, and Epidavros.

The resort was in a fair location to visit these places. However, all but Olympia are a couple of hours away. The main highway (E65) is fast, but when driving on the side roads, expect it to go much slower. There are many small, twisty roads throughout the area. These smaller roads are great for driving on, but just remember to plan for a longer travel time.
