Quote: Vina del Mar is a small beach/resort town in central Chile. When traveling in Chile, Vina is an excellent spot to spend a day relaxing on the beach in between visiting the main attractions of Chile. It is located about 5 minutes from the historical port of Valparaiso. In this journal, you can read about some of the unique facts and places in Vina del Mar.

Vina del Mar was the starting point of all my adventures while studying abroad in Chile. Vina del Mar has plenty to offer for everyone; however, I would recommend Vina del Mar more as a place to study abroad than as a place to visit on vacation. It would definitely be worth stopping for a day on the beach if you are planning to visit the sister city of Valparaiso, but an extended stay would not be necessary knowing the other amazing sights that await you in northern and southern Chile. Vina was an amazing place to study abroad because of its size, the friendly people, and location. The highlights of Vina del Mar are many, but in this journal, I will mention some of the rather unknown highlights of Vin...Read More

Let me set the scene for you a little bit: it's Thursday. The week has been dragging, to put it lightly, since our latest weekend adventures skiing in the Southern Andes mountains. Professor showed up 30 minutes late to class again and you are asking yourself the same question over and over. Why in the world did I drag myself away from the soccer game on the beach to come listen to a history lesson on the geography of Valparaiso that I understand at most, a couple words every five minutes? I never had a solid answer to that question, but that's OK, my mind would soon drift into the future. Specifically, the next 15 minutes, where I would find myself, yet again, at Bravissimo ice cream shop, buying yet...Read More

What is it like? Pure madness. That is the only way to describe a fubtol game in Chile. Now, I'm sure that if you're European and reading this, then a simple futbol game is nothing new for you, but for me it was definitely something new. We don't have a sport in the U.S. that can compare to the atmosphere of a futbol game in another country. The World Cup Qualifying games were the pure-madness games, but the local games in Vina del Mar were just as exciting. The team of Vina del Mar is called the Santiago Wanderers. They were a decent team, but by the fan support, you would have thought they were one of the top teams in the world. The games are an excellent way to learn more about the culture,...Read More

Hands-down, this was my favorite bar in Vina del Mar and probably Valparaiso, for me and my friends at least. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion I suppose, but this place was off the charts. We'll start with the service. We went often enough that they got to know us, and they were always extremely hospitable. The prices could be expensive sometimes, similar to the United States, depending on the drink, but happy hour always had reasonable prices. You can expect to pay around $3-6 for mixed drinks and $2-4 for a beer. During Happy Hour the drink prices drop to around $2-5 for everything (and Happy Hour lasts till about 11 in Chile since everything gets started so much later). They do h...Read More

Transportation around Vina del Mar

When telling people about my adventures in Chile, they are always asking about the transportation, so I thought it would be helpful to tell a little about the insanity of transportation. It is probably not like most transportation you experience where you live. Most of the time, you will be able to walk wherever you need to go, but in the case that you do need transportation, there are three basic kinds: 1) taxi, 2) collectivo, and 3) micro. Taxis are the same in Chile as they are wherever you are from. They are the most expensive (which still isn't very much) but are nice if you want privacy or need to get somewhere really fast. Collectivos are mini-taxis that will collect up to about fou...Read More

It was a regular Thursday night. We just loaded the bus, off to our next adventure, when my buddy Charles offers me a gift wrapped in brown plastic. As I opened it, it seemed to have the same magificent aurora produced by the golden ring as Smeagol tried it on for the first time. No, this gift may not be powerful enough to write a trilogy but it was a moment of discovery I will never forget. I enjoy writing about the things you won't read about in any guidebook, which is why I'm writing to you about a topic that you simply must know about before going to Chile. The topic is manjar. You probably have no idea what it is, but once you try it you will never forget. Manjar is a caramel-type paste th...Read More
