25th anniversary -- Second Honeymoon

A June 2005 trip to Banff by ilovegrayling

Quote: My parents surprised us for our 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Banff. The two-hour drive from Banff to the ice fields took over four hours because of the camera opportunities. We stayed at the Caribou Lodge -- affordable, yet first-class! Lake Louise was also indescribable!

25th anniversary -- Second Honeymoon

Overview

The trips to Lake Louise and Lake Moraine were worth the flight snags. There isn't a picture in the world that can do the sites justice. The ice crashing into the valley is astounding! The Columbian Ice fields were absolutely amazing. All of my pictures look like postcards, but none are small enough to download. If you would like to see them, I will send you pictures if you'll contact me! Quick Tips: Don't forget to budget in the per day per person for national park passes. We did a lot of research for sight-seeing and places to stay and that was a surprise when we got there. The fill-up price for an Avis return was 10-20 cents Canadian less than the price per liter on the streets. We boo...Read More

A first-rate hotel! The room was very comfortable, with iron/ironing board, coffee pot, fridge, cable/WiFi, and a hair dryer. The lobby and the building itself was breathtaking with the logs and decor, but the people made it the most wonderful lodging experience ever. They leave the most amazing toiletries and are at your door in a heartbeat if you need anything. We booked on Priceline for a fraction of the cost for our second honeymoon, and they gave us a balcony room overlooking Banff Avenue. Don't overlook the exercise room, with its steam room, sauna, and hot tubs, either. (The Keg is there too, but skip the breakfast--cold food and colder waiter. Go at supper and hope you get Janice.) Forget the breakfast buffet--the food was cold, and the waiter was colder! My husband talked me into the evening meal the next night, and I'm glad he did. The steaks was fabulous, and Janice was wonderful! She even comp'ed us dessert because it was our anniversary and she felt bad about the breakfast disaster. Lobster was the specialty that night, but the steaks smelled so good in the lobby of the hotel, I couldn't pass it up.

An amazing historical archive of Banff through the Whyte family, from the founding of the art school to the talents of the current generation of Whites, this is a great place to start if you want to understand the history of the Canadian Rockies and its people. I could have stayed half a day easily.

Amazing! (Charge your camera and buy extra memory!) Be sure to take your waterproof hiking boots, jacket, and headband, because the cold wind blowing down that glacier is biting. I wasn't about to come all the way from Texas and not walk on a glacier, either! I would have hiked up to it in flip-flops and a swimsuit just to go. Park and walk up--there are guides and you don't have to wait for a bus to take you out to the glacier, unless you don't mind the wait, of course.
