Relaxing in Baden-Baden

An April 2004 trip to Baden-Baden by chele318

A relaxing weekend in beautiful Baden-Baden, Germany.

Baden-Baden was a beautiful and relaxing German town on the edge of the Black Forest. Certainly the best reason to visit Baden-Baden is for the spas. We visited the older Roman Irish Baths (Friedrichsbad) and enjoyed a wonderful, 16-step spa treatment for only 30 euros. It lasted around 4 hours and was a great break from the normal stress of traveling. The town also had a small market along the river which was a great place to find bargains on some interesting goods. While eating at a small cafe we met a very kind German woman who recommended not to travel into the Black Forest because she felt there were more interesting things for people our age to do, but I wish we had. The Neu Schloss castle, a quick climb above town offered amazing views over Baden-Baden, and the gardens are worth a stroll as well.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking was the primary way to get around, though the walk from the train station into Baden-Baden took about 2 hours. However, you see some adorable sights on the way. If this doesn't sound desirable, there is also bus service from the station into Baden-Baden and around the town.

The hotel was comfortable, though the owners did not speak any English, so we had to rely on someone else staying there to help us out. They were very accommodating, letting us check in early and everything. Breakfast cost extra, which was a downside, but it was right down the street from an adorable, affordable bakery with great breakfast pastries. Unfortunately, the toilet was shared by the floor, but there was a shower in the room--in the middle of the room, which made it somewhat awkward to be with friends, but after a nude experience at the spas, it was fine.

The biergarten was amazing. We sat outside (though there is also indoor seating) in an adorable little garden/patio area with string lighting through the trees. We stayed for a few hours just talking and enjoying the beer, and the wait staff was very nice. Our primary server spoke a number of languages, including English, German, and French, and was very willing to help us with the menu (German only) and stayed to talk for awhile. The beer there is traditional German beer and very enjoyable, especially the Weissebier. The food was great, and an appetizer was enough to fill us up, with a little dessert to polish off the meal. Traditional German dress was worn, with the occasional German music by live performers, though this was not to the point of being obnoxious.
