St. Lucian Beauty

A June 2005 trip to St. Lucia by calidris

Soufriere is located away from most of the hectic, touristy sites of St. Lucia, but offers the finest of everything a visitor could wish for. You can enjoy spectacular snorkeling/scuba diving, hiking, bird-watching, fine food, and natural scenery right outside of your own tropical cabin.

Lodging is in semi-rustic cabins scattered along the coastal mountain slope. They are very spacious and comfortable, with extra privacy for a relaxing vacation. Everything that you need is close by, within walking distance.

The resort is near the Soufriere Marine Reserve, so it has good access to fish schools, coral reefs, caves, and underwater mountains and cliffs, all full of coral formations. The water clarity is best in the dry season, but always enjoyable. Whale sharks and sperm whales are rare, but might be seen during your dive.

The PitonsBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

The two Pitons have been recently named as a World Heritage Site and are worth seeing for yourself. These two remnants of an ancient volcano that blew itself into two pieces offer a great view and a wonderful hike for the energetic. Take your binoculars to see all the birds and then the spectacular view from the summit.
This innovative effort at community-based conservation of the environment and local economy is truly a special experience to enjoy. The reserve provides areas for local fisherman, scuba groups, sailboat moorings, and strict conservation areas. With solid community support, the reserve is a rare success in restoring the depleted fisheries and making room for recreation of all sorts.
