Roanoke Journals

Roanoke, VA

A travel journal to Roanoke by Carmen

Quote: Roanoke is known as the "Star City of the South" and as you drive into the city, you are greeted by a large star that sits atop Mill Mountain. It's like a big beacon, inviting you to stop and stay a while. Roanoke is located along I-81 as you travel south through the state of Virginia, and only a few miles away lies the home of my college rival, Virginia Tech. It's a fairly small community, compared with the big cities, yet offers enough to keep you busy - even a AAA hockey team.

Roanoke, VA

Overview

Quote:
When I lived in Roanoke, my own personal highlight included my weekly treks to the arena to see the Roanoke Express, the local AAA hockey team. It's not like professional hockey in the sense that it's a lot more animated - more arguments, more fights, more fan interactions. If you get the chance to see a game, take it. Even if you don't like hockey -- seeing it in person is very different from watching it on tv. My dining highlight is eating at a restaurant called Macados. It was a place I frequented often, mostly for the parmesean chicken wrap sandwich. Perhaps it was a sense of nostalga, since there was a Macados near my college that closed down. A little bit of UVA in a Va. tech town. :) ...Read More

Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center

Hotel | "Hotel Roanoke"

Quote:
Hotel Roanoke is also a landmark for the city. It's designed in the English Tudor style, and if you're going to have a wedding reception or a conference, this is the place to do it. You can have drinks in the pub or eat in the dining room. The food is a little pricey, (it's where a lot of the 'blue-haired' ladies have lunches and teas), and it's not the best food in Roanoke, but you go there more for the experience than anything. Go all out and have the valet park your car for you. Get dressed up and take a date!

Montano's International Restuarant

Restaurant | "Montanos"

Quote:
Montanos has the best selection of wine and beer in Roanoke, and some excellent dining! My favorite, just because I'm a meat gal, is the barbeque hamburger. MMMM! My friends enjoy their seafood as well. And the desserts! Wow. The prices are reasonable and the food is pretty good.

Macados was my restaurant stomping ground when I lived in Roanoke. I had learned of the restaurant when I went to the University of Virginia, as there was one near the grounds. I grew addicted to the food when I was in school, and was delighted to discover that it was a chain and Roanoke had its very own. First, let me tell you about the raspberry lemonade. Tip: order it by the pitcher--then get a refill. It''s sweet and tart and the perfect combination of raspberry and lemonade. Then, let me make your mouth water by describing my favorite thing to order off the menu--the parmesan chicken wrap. They take this sun-dried tomato pita wrap, and fill it with grilled chicken a...Read More

Mill Mountain Theatre: Administrative Offices

Attraction | "Mill Mountain Star"

Quote:
You can't miss Mill Mountain if you are driving through Roanoke, because there is a big lit star at the top. At night, the Star is visible all over town. For the teenagers, Mill Mountain is the 'make-out' spot. But for the regular tourists, traveling up Mill Mountain to the Star is well worth the spectacular view of the city. While you are there, walk on the mountain paths and visit the Mill Mountain Zoo. When you're finished, take a turn onto the Blue Ridge Parkway for a leisurely mountain drive. In the fall, the colors are just gorgeous!

Valley View Mall

Attraction

Quote:
Most people that come to Roanoke from the surrounding areas come to shop! (Southwest Virginia doesn't have much in the way of big malls). Valley View Mall is the best mall in the area, with retailers like Hecht's, Lerner, Lane Bryant, B.Moss, Paul Harris, The Gap, The Disney Store, etc. It's a pretty nice mall for its size.

Corned Beef & Co Bar and Grill

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Corned Beef & Co."

Quote:
The weekend scene always starts at Corned Beef. On weekends, they either have a live band or spin some dance music. They have a dance floor that's always full, and a pool room with tables and a virtual golf machine. Drinks are priced between 3 and 6 dollars, beers are usually on special. If you get the munchies, they have wood-fired pizza that is really tasty, and some scrumptious desserts, plus the usual bar munchies like nachos and chicken fingers. The only drawback is that it gets kind of smoky.
