Quick Weekend Camping

A June 2005 trip to Placerville by Just For Fun

We just bought a camper shell for a truck we have, so off we went to El Dorado National Park. It was not as hot as I thought it would be.

El Dorado is between Placerville and Lake Tahoe. I have passed it a million times but never knew you could camp there. It was nice, because the drive was shorter and the views there are just as spectacular as Tahoe. We camped at Silver Creek, which is off Hwy. 50, a little down the road. I suggest this one if you like quiet, as the ones closer to the road tend to be more party-type campsites. This one was very quiet and respectable.

With the rains being so late this year, however, there was still snow at 6,000 feet, which made the nights really cold. We didn't pack for that weather and ended up a human burrito at night, trying to stay warm. Alas, we did not succeed. But it was hilarious.

I would recommend hiking along the fire roads and taking a dip in the river. You'll be in pain at first, then numb, and then you'll enjoy yourself. The rivers are full and beautiful, anywhere you go around there. And during the day, it's hot enough that you'll thaw out if you sit in the sun.

Quick Tips:

For Silver Creek, it's most ideal to RV, as there is no washing water or shower--only drinking water and a bathroom. Take a portable shower if your RV/camper shell doesn't have one.

Best Way To Get Around:

Best to drive there. Once you're there, you can bike and hike. When returning, try taking the backroads on the fire road back to Hwy 50. There are beautiful views of Lake Tahoe, and if you're lucky, like we were, you'll see gorgeous fields of flowers.

Best Things Nearby:
The river! The trees! The stars at night! Nature is the highlight here for sure. We didn't venture far, but didn't need to. The river alone was so relaxing to sit next to just veg, eat, read a book, and relax. There are many flowers that are beautiful close by.

Best Things About the Resort:
Most of the campgrounds are next to the river, so more than likely, you'll get a view of the river from your campsite. I enjoyed the silence of the campground and the beauty. With the late snows this year, the river is running full late into the year, which makes for beautiful views and fun swimming.

Resort Experience:
It was very nice, clean, and quiet. The keepers are part-time summer employees, a couple, and are very kind and helpful. I highly recommend this for R&R time, but not so much for partying.

It is a trick to find. It's off of Highway 50, right past Kyburz. You turn right onto Silver Fork Road and make your way down. It's a very nondescript road, as there isn't a big sign, so you have to keep your eyes open as soon as you pass Kyburz.
