Kabuki performances can last all day. We just went to one short act in the evening. It made absolutely no sense to me and had something to do
with people turning into butterflies, but it was an interesting cultural experience. You probably want to try the shortest act possible the first time you go-- you can always buy a ticket for another act if you love it. Ask the tourist office for help in booking it. Kabuki is performed every month from the 1st to the 25th. The theater is located in the high-tech Ginza area of Tokyo, which is kind of like Times Square in New York. There are lots of restaurants so you can make a night of it.
