Salmon and Glaciers - Crusing Alaska

An August 2000 trip to Inside Passage by SharonB

I had never been on a cruise before, and was a bit fearful of being bored, but the Inside Passage Cruise from Vancouver to Alaska was the best way to see things.

The ship spends a day in Glacier Bay National Park, which is an amazing place, but you definitely need good sunglasses and sunscreen for the snow glare. Try the Mexican restaurant on the Main Street in Juno - their fish tacos are the best I ever had, and "Alaskan Mexican" was a treat. Rafting though the Wild Eagle preserve was a great side trip, and very peaceful. It was surreal seeing all these eagles (babies and adults) perched in the trees watching you watching them!

Quick Tips:

I recommend going when we did, (towards the end of season) which was the beginning of September. The weather was perfect, warm enough during the day, cool nights, and most of the kids back in school. The ship was not nearly full, which I don't think was the case during the summer. I found the trip to the Juno icefield expensive for what it was, kind of a quick "photo opp" on the glacier.

Best Way To Get Around:

I took Holland America, and most of the people on the ship were were much older, which was fine since the side trips were only a few people instead of a large group. What made the cruise work for me was the the ship was in port all day, so it gave me the chance to sign up for very physical exploration, on my own, or as part of an optional tour. When you crawl back on board the ship after one of these adventures, there's a nice dinner, pool, etc. For me, it was the best way to see an isolated place like Alaska.
