A November 2000 trip to Hapuna Beach by joantri

Big IslandMore Photos

Hapuna Beach is one of the longest white sand beaches on the Big Island. It is the perfect location to relax and enjoy the Big Island, but close enough to circle the island in a day.

Big Island
Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls, Waipio Valley lookout, Kona coffee groves, relax on the beach, and dine at the Canoe House and Coast Grille. You will feel like you have taken advantage of a lot of the Big Island with such a short time.

Quick Tips:

Visit the Big Island after Thanksgiving and before the second week of December and you will enjoy the Island without many tourists and at lower prices.

Best Way To Get Around:

Rent a car to take advantage of touring at your own pace. Drive around the volcano park to see craters and recent lava flow - it is incredible. You cannot get close to live lava, but you will feel that you are close enough when you see the smoke in the distance.
Hapuna Prince
The price is high, but the resort is worth it. Take advantage of visiting during slow times or use frequent miles points. This hotel has great rooms with views of the ocean and lanais for each room. The restaurants for dinner are amazing, but breakfast is a complete rip off unless you enjoy paying $50 for a continental breakfast for 2. The view from the breakfast restaurant is incredible, but you can enjoy coffee and a snack from your own lanai with the same view. There is snorkeling at the beach and a beautiful pool. The workout facilities are top notch with classes and all equipment you will need. If you like golf, they have a great golf course.

Restaurant

All the ingredients used are so fresh from the salad to the seafood. Try the trio of fish prepared in a unique way. All the seafood is prepared with a unique Hawaiian twist that you will love. The view is over the beach and is great for sunset. The service is also very good. Of all the restaurants that we dined around the Big Island, the Coast Grille was the best.

Oodles of NoodlesBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Oodles of Noodles is just how it sounds. This restaurant provides good food in a shopping center. The dishes are salads, noodles, and entrees that are not as pricey as other restaurants. If you are looking for a casual restaurant near Kona, try it. They also have specialty shaved ice drinks with alcohol.

Canoe House Mauna Lani
For a great sunset dining experience, try the Canoe House. The menu does not offer many choices other than seafood, so you may not love it if fish does not suit you. Everything is a la carte, so you may want to try a salad or appetizer. The food is good, but not amazing. You are definitely paying for the atmosphere and view. You will enjoy your meal even more when you can see Maui on a clear day.

Hawaii National Volcanoes Park
You cannot describe the volcano unless you see it. It seems as if you are on another planet. If you drive through the Chain of Craters Road, it will give you a great perspective of growth throughout the years and views of the ocean and darkened hillside from previous lava flow. Once you reach the end, park and walk on the lava following the guided flags. You will be amazed and almost frightened of the view you will have of the smoke from current lava flow to the ocean. You will not be able to get close to the current lava flow unless you are a professional hiker with appropriate equipment for this type of hike.
