A July 2005 trip

Restaurant | "Cozymel’s Mexican Grill"
Inside, there were many tables, but only a few people. Most were outside, but they probably get their business during the week, when people order out from their offices. We went on a Sunday afternoon. After perusing the menu, my friend ordered an Arnold Palmer (half lemonade and half iced tea), while I ordered an iced tea. It took a very long time for the waitress to bring us chips and salsa. I don’t know if they were shorthanded or if the waitress was new to her job, but I found the service very inefficient. My friend ordered the Shredded Beef Big Burrito with Ancho Chile Sauce. I was originally going to order the Baked Chile Relleno, but I asked the waitress if she had tasted it. She recommended the Chile Relleno Tradicional instead. I decided to go with her recommendation. When I received my plate, I found the presentation very pleasing. It was a big chile relleno with beans and cooked zucchini and squash. I thought it was the oddest tasting chile relleno I had ever tasted, but it wasn’t bad; it was just different. I wonder if it’s because the Mexican cuisine here is supposed to reflect the island of Cozumel, which is part of the Caribbean area of Mexico. Most of the Mexican food I have tasted is from a different region of Mexico. Either that or they have watered down the taste for Americans. My friend loved her burrito but was unable to finish all but half. I finished everything except my vegetables. I rationalized that the vegetables were soaking in oil, so they couldn’t be that good for me.
We had a little room for dessert, albeit not much, so we wanted to see the dessert menu. The waitress brought tiny shot glasses of each dessert from the dessert menu. They were $2 instead of the full price for the regular-sized desserts. They were the perfect size for us, so we ordered our own mini dessert. My friend ordered the Margarita Cheesecake, while I ordered the Banana Pudding. Unfortunately, she did not handle them very sanitarily. Luckily, I am not too squeamish about these things, and we are healthy adults, so I did not say anything. The mini desserts were very good, but it would have been a better buy to order a full dessert and split it.
We were very happy with our meal, so we intend to come back and try other menu items, but beware of the sloppy service.
