Emergency Trip to Helsinki

A June 2005 trip to Helsinki by sandyvoit

I got a call from my parents (in their 80s), and my dad had emergency brain surgery in Helsinki. I had to get there ASAP!

Hotel | "Scandic Continental"

This is a first-class hotel that caters to business people. There is a great restaurant (Olivo), and a room includes a superb buffet breakfast. I particularly enjoyed the indoor pool and especially the sauna (with a fantastic view of the park, lake, and beyond) every morning. There is a business lounge with two Internet-access computers and snacks. The staff was very helpful. It is pricy, but a value given the high cost of Helsinki. It is conveniently located.

Restaurant

Due to proximity to the hospital where my father was admitted, I ate four meals here and was not disappointed once (despite my yearning for exploring the city, it had to wait til my father was discharged). Great food and variety (soup, salad, pastas, seafood, meats). Very rich and delicious. Try all their soups. Prices ranged from $10-$20. Great service.

Restaurant

A wonderful dinner - dining room is warm and intimate. There is quasi-outside dining on the sidewalk with glass-enclosed space. We stuck to local dishes - reindeer, an array of herring dishes (fried, mousse, raw), and a fantastic salmon soup. Everything was superb. They served an array of breads and fresh butter. Service was great. Cloth tablecloths. Prices were very reasonable for Helsinki - about $11-$15/person. Near opera house, sports palace, and Toolon park (as well as hospital).
