A wild experience in the Dominican Republic

A June 2005 trip to Puerto Plata by Zetty Carrillo

Quote: Puerto Plata was a whole other world, unlike America or Mexico. The culture there had its own distinctive flavor. Each little area was different. The water at Confesi beach was not pretty, but at the Playa Dorada, it was much nicer.

The first three-bedroom villa we were given was in need of a lot of renovation. The bedspreads and furniture were stained excessively. There was a large backyard that looked very nice, but the pool looked very murky and dirty also. After complaining and insisting on another villa, we were given a nicer three-bedroom villa that was clean, with three and a half bathrooms. It was not luxury, but it was clean and nice. The actual villa itself, however, was very nice. It would be fantastic with some new couches. The backyard was very, very nice, with a huge terrace and a large private pool that was sparkly clean. The landscaping was immaculate. From inside the villa, there were steps that le...Read More

We went to Sun Village and spent a day there. We had seen one of the villas, and it was new and beautiful. The grounds at the resort and the pools were beautiful. The restaurants were very nice, and the food was very good. All the resort grounds were just so nice. The villa that we were shown had very nice luxury furniture in it, bathrobes in the closets, a nice bar, nice terraces, and they had views of the beach. The restaurant we ate at was the Mediterranean one, and the food was excellent. The service was excellent, and everyone was so nice. I could stay here forever! At night, we visited the club, and it was very nice. They had premium drinks there also--not just domestic drinks. The ...Read More

We went on the Jeep Safari Tour, and it was an adventure!! They do not tell you that you should be physically fit and that you need to wear good, tight canvas shoes or tight water shoes. You start off in the back of a truck with several other people. They drive you down a bumpy road through several villages. They take you to see how they make coffee and cigars. You get to try them and buy them. You can also buy their mamajuana, which is composed of rum, eucalyptus leaves, honey, and red wine. It is supposed to be for medicinal purposes or to help sexually enhance you. It is cheaper to buy these items here, where they make it, than in town. They take you to buy some of their crafts, which are che...Read More

Rancho Tipico de Esposade

Attraction | "Rancho Tipico"

Quote:
Rancho Tipico is about a 5 minute ride from LHVC. They open about 4pm, and by 5pm, it is packed. It cost us $15 for the taxi ride to take six people in a van, round-trip. They had a band playing by 5:30pm. It was indoor/outdoor-type setting. It had a large dance floor. We were treated like VIPs. The club consisted mainly of locals. The music was good, nonstop. We danced several times, and that is a good workout to that music. The service was excellent, and the drinks were cheap. You have to get there early for a good, or any, seat.

This club is located in Playa Dorada, adjacent to the casino. It doesn't open until 11pm. People started strolling in more by 12pm. We went on a Thursday night, and they played international music. The club wasn't very big. They had a DJ. There was a combination of people there, from tourists to locals. The taxi to get there from LHVC Hacienda Resorts was $30 round-trip for six people in a van. The club was nice, but I wasn't majorly impressed. The dance floor was kind of small, and there were only two little bar areas. There were a lot of younger people there, like 18-year-olds to early 20-year-olds. They played a lot of rap-type music from America. They played reggae and Salsa, but not mu...Read More
