Amsterdam is full of interesting sights. Just walking along and seeing the buildings and canels is wonderful. Especially memorable are the Van Gogh Museum, the Riksmuseum, and canal trips

Quick Tips:

Stop at the tourist info center as soon as you get to Amsterdam to buy a transportation pass and to make arrangements for out of town tours. Read Rick Steve's book France, Netherlands, and Belgium.

Best Way To Get Around:

The public transportation is great.

We stayed in a double room with a private bath for $63 a night, a bargain in expensive Amsterdam. Breakfast was included. Also, you need to bring your own towels.

Believe it or not, the cafeteria at the Centraal Station serves wonderful food, including full meals, if desired. Price varies, of course, but the pic of the week(special) is about $11 with side dishes included.

Attraction | "Anne Frank House"

This tall, narrow office and storage building beside a canal was the home to several people during the Second World War. They lived in cramped quarters, almost having the same experience as people in prison: they could not go out or do what they wished because they had to be so quiet. It is very sad to think that they made it so long, only to be caught and shipped off to a concentration camp in the last year of the war. In addition to the house itself, there is a very interesting exhibit of the editions of Ann Frank's diary.

Attraction

Ther paintings in this museum are all the ones you have seen in your art history or western civilizations book. It is hard to believe that you are really seeing the originals. To make things easier for the fast browser types, all the most famous paintings are in a single gallery on the top floor.

The history of the Netherlands and of the Dutch West and East Indies Companies are illustrated in another gallery on the first floor. Artifacts, portraits, and models of ships make a fascinating study for students of history.

A modern museum, this is large enough to hold a crowd and still enable the patrons to see the art. I expecially liked the fact that there was a library, where one could stop to rest and read about Van Gogh.

Story/Tip

The Keukenhof, a very large beautiful garden, is a must see. Also, there a numerous excursions, of one day or a half day, offered through the tourist office. My favorite stopped at the large flower auction near Shipol airport. It is unbelieveable large and well organized.
