Lake Okoboji, Iowa Vacation with Kids and Grandchi

A June 2005 trip to Okoboji by Fern-Marie

Lake Okaboji, Iowa, was beautiful. West Oaks Resort was clean, comfortable for 6 people, and had just about everything available, including games, pools, exercise room, sauna, Jacuzzi, and a great fishing dock. The fishing was excellent, and we caught many varieties of fish. It was a great time.

Hotel

The unit was clean and comfortable, with lots of room for six people. There was a well-stocked kitchen with storage space for all our food. The kitchen has large standard-size appliances. The master bedroom has a Jacuzzi that is very large, but no shower, so you need to shower in the bathroom down the hall. The guest bedroom is large and has more-than-adequate storage space. There is a great queen-size futon bed/sofa in the living room for the kids/grandchildren.

The units are quiet, even with two pools outside. They are air-conditioned for summer and have a fireplace for cooler months. Everything is maintained well.

There are six cocktail lounges adjacent to the resort that get noisy Thursday through Saturday. This is the only problem, and we were out doing our vacation thing most of the evening, so it only bothered us for a couple hours.

I would recommend this resort to family and friends.

Restaurant

This restaurant was owned originally by three sisters and opened in 1945. Now it is owned by their cousins. It is very clean, and they have good food for a family diner, specializing in local fish. We had breakfast, and the potatoes are shred fresh. It's a small diner with a lot of hospitality.

Crescent Beach Lodge has it all: ambience, great food, and terrific service. There were six people dining, and we all had different meals that were attractively presented and prepared. The service was the best we've had anywhere. The restaurant overlooks the canals and Okoboji Lake, so the views are spectacular.

Arnold's Park Amusement Park is great fun for kids and young adults. There is a roller coaster and Ferris wheel that are well maintained. They boast 32 amusement rides. You can play miniature golf and drive go-cart-type cars for a small extra fee. Snacks can be bought there, and there is a gift shop. You can spend an entire afternoon visiting Arnold's Park Amusement Park.
