San Diego

A May 2005 trip to San Diego by dbmaury

I always love it when business brings me to San Diego. I feel like I am working, but I am really having more fun than anything.

Overview

I always stay downtown. It is an amazingly diverse city, but my focus had always been in the city.

Quick Tips:

Spend the extra money to stay in town. It is worth it for the dining and the culture. There are some of the most amazing restaurants you could ever want in the Gaslamp District.

Best Way To Get Around:

There is a light rail system that can take you most anywhere, including all the way to Tijuana if you want.

It is pricey, but the ES is worth it. You always get a suite, and the free breakfast is part of the package. I am a diamond in HHonors, so I was upgraded to a huge room with a view of the harbor.

If you have to get out of the city, I love this hotel. I stayed here several years back, when we had our national sales conference here. She is the grand dame. Parts are worn, but the magic is still there where it matters.

They shot a scene from "Top Gun" here, and it is the only reason to go here. The food is horrible. Maybe it is the Virginian or Texan in me, but I have had good barbeque, and this was not the place. It was dreadful.

I took my sales team to dinner here, and it was magnificent. The sangria flowed and the Spanish cuisine was a delight. Service was great, and the desserts melted in my mouth. I try to go back here whenever I am in town.
