An August 2002 trip to Oranjestad by dbmaury

What a splendid place. They call it the Happy Little Island for a reason!

Overview

The best thing we did was rent a car and see the island. We loved the Natural Bridge and the caves of the original islanders. The California Lighthouse is great, too.

Quick Tips:

Don't be in a hurry. You'll be surprised by the topogrophy of this island. You feel like you are in the American Southwest, but there's swimming!!!

Best Way To Get Around:

Rent a car to get out of the city. In the city, walking works fine.
This is a very nice hotel with great shops and restaurants. It is right in the middle of the action. Be advised that Sundays are dead here, so plan for that to be a lazy day. Also, you have to take a boat out to the private beach. It's kind of a pain, but the beach is nice.

Restaurant

I just love the pace anywhere in the Caribbean. The drinks were fruity and abundant. The seafood was fresh and delicious. I just cannot rave more about this place!

Story/Tip

The cruise ships docks right in town, and the souvenir hawkers are abundant. Wait until after the ships leave and you can find some deals. It is the Caribbean, so be prepared to haggle.
