Little Jewel on Pompano Beach

A June 2005 trip to Pompano Beach by karlag

We spent an extended weekend (5 days and 4 nights) in Pompano Beach. We wanted to stay at the beach and took a chance on a hotel with mixed reviews. The result - we found a real jewel and one of our new favorite places to stay!

  • 6 reviews
The best thing about the hotel is that it is located directly on the beach. A lot of hotels in the area are across the street from the beach, especially when you get down to Ft. Lauderdale (approximately 7 miles south of the hotel). The hotel has its own private beach, and with 143 guest rooms, it is never crowded. There are also two pools on property and a large sundeck. The hotel is also near the Intercoastal Waterway, where there is a variety of wonderful restaurants and night spots.

Take advantage of the concierge service. They are very knowledgeable of the area and can help you arrange anything from in-room massages to water sports.

If you enjoy water sports, this is the area to be. They have diving, snorkeling, parasailing, boat rentals - just about anything you like to do in/around the water.

The hotel was very clean and the staff was very friendly. The accommodations are more than adequate and have been recently renovated. The rooms are large and nicely appointed. There is complimentary wi-fi service available in all guest rooms.

Quick Tips:

Get a hold of the free local publication Great Locations. It has very good information about local dining, activities, and nightlife. It also has a good map of the area and surrounding areas, along with several good coupons for a variety of activities and dining.

We booked a snorkel trip while we were there. We used Pro Divers, and I would highly recommend this trip for anyone, from beginners to experienced snorkelers. It is located on A1A in Ft. Lauderdale, near Las Olas Boulevard, which has lots of activities, shopping, and restaurants.

Best Way To Get Around:

This hotel is very close to a lot of activities, shops, and restaurants. However, I would recommend getting a rental car so that you can take advantage of the spectacular ocean views driving down A1A (Ocean Boulevard). It also allows you to drive down to Ft. Lauderdale and enjoy the activities that abound there. And since you are in Florida, the cost of rental cars is very reasonable. We paid just .99/day through Budget and were given a complimentary upgrade.

If you are into biking, there is also a bike lane down A1A.

This hotel has its own stretch of private beach. From the moment we checked in, this hotel kept us amazed at the value for the money. We booked a great deal at $94/night. For a beachfront hotel, we felt this was a great deal.

The hotel is approximately 20 minutes northeast of the Ft. Lauderdale airport, on A1A, and very easy to get to. It is also about 10 to 15 minutes north of the heart of Ft. Lauderdale. This makes it close enough to enjoy the activities in Ft. Lauderdale, but far enough away to not be as hectic and crowded. It is a nonsmoking hotel, so please take this into account when making reservations.

Our room was like a small apartment. It had a separate living room, kitchen, bedroom, and walk-in closet/changing room. It is an older property, but they have recently renovated and everything was clean and fresh. There are two pools on the property. Both are very warm. The private beach was never crowded and very clean. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We even received a complimentary late check-out. The hotel also offers cabana, umbrella, and boogie-board rentals at a fair price.

The restaurant had good food and decent service. The average dinner entrée price was $18. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also a bar on premises with 2-for-1 drinks from 5 to 7pm each evening. The restaurant specializes in seafood. There is a tiki bar near the pool that has drinks, sodas, and snacks. It closes at 4pm, however.

The staff was warm and welcoming. The concierge helped us arrange a snorkel trip and an in-room massage. Everyone was friendly and eager to please. This is a very family-friendly, affordable hotel.

Cap's Place Island Restaurant & BarBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Cap's Place Island Restaurant & Bar"

Cap's is a very unique restaurant in that it is located on a small island and the only way on/off is through a complimentary water taxi to the restaurant.

Their specialty is seafood. We had an appetizer of the bacon-wrapped scallops. For dinner we had the crabmeat stuffed snapper, broiled scallops, and the broiled platter. All were cooked perfectly and the flavor was outstanding. The service was well above average as well. The portions are large and seafood was very fresh. Splurge on dessert - we had the peanut butter pie and cheesecake, and both were delicious. Besides seafood, they had a nice selection of salads. There was also steak and chicken on the menu. The dinner comes with salad, a fruit cup or chowder, and fresh homemade bread.

The atmosphere was relaxed and casual. The bar is separate from the restaurant, which is nice if dining with a family.

This restaurant is located next to the Sand Harbor Resort on the Intracoastal Waterway. The restaurant has spectacular views of the ocean. It also has boat docking available.

The restaurant specializes in seafood, but my daughter had a steak that was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. My husband and I had broiled scallops and a broiled seafood platter. The seafood was very flavorful and fresh. The service was outstanding. We split a bananas foster dessert that was to die for! They also had a more than adequate wine list that had a large selection of wines to fit any budget and taste.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The food was outstanding as was the service. I'd highly recommend this restaurant. I know we'll be going back!

Restaurant | "Islamorado Fish Company"

This restaurant is located next between the Fishing Hall of Fame and Bass Pro Shops. We did not have reservations and our wait was approximately 25 minutes. However, if you are dining here on a weekend, I would recommend reservations.

There is a spectacular saltwater fish tank with beautiful, colorful fish that keep the kids entertained while waiting for your food.

The service was above average. The restaurant specializes in seafood but also has pastas, salads, chicken, and steaks. The food was very flavorful and the seafood items were fresh. I had the seafood pasta, which had clams, mussels, calamari, and lobster - yes, lobster. My daughter had the shrimp, which were large and cooked perfectly. It has something for every taste and budget. The menu items were reasonably priced, and the portions are more than ample. We didn't have room for dessert, and we are dessert lovers!

The restaurant is conveniently located just south of the Ft. Lauderdale airport and is very easy to get to.

Attraction | "Snorkeling"

We love snorkeling, and this trip was recommended by our hotel concierge. We have not snorkeled in this area, so I have nothing to compare it to; however, the trip was a lot of fun and very family oriented.

The cost was very affordable and includes snorkeling equipment at no extra charge. The tour operators also have underwater cameras for purchase so you can remember your trip.

The dive center was easy to find, right off A1A in Ft. Lauderdale, near Los Olas, where there is a lot of shopping and other activities. The boat also had a glass bottom for those that can't/don't snorkel. There was a galley onboard with drinks and snacks. There was also complimentary drinking water. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The instructions were clear and we felt very safe.

The staff throws bread around the boat to draw fish, so everyone gets to see lots of beautiful, local fish.

The trip is 2 hours long, with a short boat ride to/from the reef, which is located just north of the dive shop and about a 1/2 mile off shore. All in all, we had a lot of fun!
