Weekend Getaway in the Illinois Countryside

A May 2005 trip to Galena by rshp

Quote: The second-biggest tourist attraction in Illinois - make sure you have a pleasant and well-located accommodation, transport, and a wish to relax.
Quote:
A restored Victorian mansion originally belonging to a steamboat owner, this is filled with antiques. Each room is elegantly decorated in a slightly different style, some with four-poster beds, and all with pleasant views and private bathrooms.

The antique billiards table is a highlight, as are the piano, library, and croquet set, and guests are encouraged to use everything as they wish.

Cheese and wine is provided each night, and a three-course breakfast is provided at 9am.

The hotel is a 5-minute walk from Main Street, but set far enough away from the crowd to be a peaceful retreat.

Warning - no children accepted.

Cannova's

Restaurant

Quote:
This is a fairly informal but bustling family-owned restaurant serving homemade pizzas and a selection of pastas and salad. There is a pleasant, relaxed environment and a friendly and accommodating staff. Reservations not taken, but if you call ahead, you will be put on a priority seating list, which is basically the same as making a reservation.

Quote:
This gives a comical, informative, and insightful history of Galena and its association with Ulysses Grant. This tour offers pretty views and is a great way to "find your feet" in the town.
