A June 2005 trip

Quote: HORRIBLE! The bathroom flooded (from the floor drain). The toilet didn't work. The "beach nearby" isn't safe. There were cockroaches. Across the street are slums. The staff was rude, assumed we didn't understand Spanish, and therefore, talked about us very rudely and unprofessionally. Don't go.
The toilet was another issue with the bathroom. Despite several requests at the desk, it remained unfixed and an annoyance. Every time the toilet was used, it was necessary to remove the lid from the tank, and replace the rubber piece that seals the tank and allows it to fill, so that the toilet can be used and flushed again.
According to the RCI resort information, the units contained 1 double bed, and 1 sleep sofa. The "sleep sofa" was not what one would assume. Instead of a regular sofa that folds out into a bed with a mattress & springs, it was more like a child's play futon with an inch & a half of foam (instead of a mattress) that sat on wooden planks on the floor. This is not suitable for a person to sleep on!
Then there were the cockroaches that were all over the halls. Luckily, we didn't see any in the room. But, if they were sitting on one side of the door, one can be sure that they were sitting on the other side as well! It just wasn't sanitary!
Across the street from the hotel, are slums! Poverty stricken, falling down, and dirty shacks with beggars sitting in the doorways. I did NOT feel safe in the hotel!
Also, according to the RCI resort information, there is a beach 0.6 miles from the hotel. Well, there was infact a beach right there. However, it was a locals' beach, primarily for fisherman to beach their rowboats, and not safe for an American woman to sit, relax, and enjoy the sun. Therefore, it was necessary to get into a cab everyday for the cost of 15,000 to 20,000 Bolivar to get to a suitable beach.
And, to top it all off, the staff at the resort was rude and unfriendly. I am proficient in Spanish (not necessarily fluent, but proficent enough to get by). So, when the staff spoke to each other making rude comments and bad mouthing us in Spanish, they expected us not to understand. The staff (not all but most of the staff) was rude, obnoxious, and unprofessional.
This is the one vacation that completely disgusted me, where I found myself wanting to go home.
I can honestly say, that due to the accommodations, this was the worst vacation I have ever experienced!
