If you want your soul to find peace, go to Montreux.
Freddie Mercury
Montreux is one of those places that seem to hold certain magic. It’s spectacularly
located at the shores of Lake Geneva, bathed in afternoon sunshine streaming
across the lake and protected from chilly northerlies by a wall of giant mountains.
It offers breathtaking views of the Dents du Midi peaks (9750 feet) on the other
side of the lake. Thanks to its mild microclimate, visitors can marvel at a wide
variety of tropical plants lining the scenic lakeshore walk.
To the west of the village are the magnificent vineyards of Lavaux. Terraced
in these vineyards are a number of miraculously preserved, picturesque villages.
Visiting the village cellars to taste the local wines, like St. Saphoring, Eppesse,
or La Côte – to name just a few – is an absolute must.
Rochers de Naye
Rochers de Naye, an outpost of the Waadtland Alps, is famous for its view of the
crescent of Lake Geneva curving into the distance and the Wallis and Savoy Alps.
Board a steep rack train at the Montreux train station. A stroll through the
Alpine garden Rambertia is certainly recommended after the ascent,
as well as a visit of the new «Marmot’s-Paradise» with it’s
Marmots from three continents.
Quick Tips:
Chillon Castle
This area attraction should not be missed. This beautiful example of Roman and
early gothic architecture consists of 25 building units. The oldest part dates
back to the first millennium. In the 13th century, under Count Peter II of Savoy,
Chillon was completely transformed and considerably enlarged. Today, the castle
is carefully restored and open to the public as a museum. The dungeon was
the prison where Bonivard was chained to a pillar between 1530 an1536. His destiny
inspired Lord Byron to write the famous poem «The Prisoner of Chillon» (1816).
Casino of Montreux
The Casino-Kursaal de Montreux was officially opened on November 26, 1881, to
entertain guests staying at hotels and palatial residences in the city. On December
4, 1971, the Casino burnt down at the end of a Frank Zappa and the Mothers concert.
Deep Purple was recording in Montreux at the moment and immortalized the event
with their hit song "Smoke on the Water."
